34 mill per year avrage. But it's weighted. 40 mill in 2021, 45 in 22 and 17 in 23.
AND BAUER HAS AN OPT OUT! after each year. So as I understand it, he could walk after making 85 in two years if he decides that he is worth more than a paltry 17 in 20023.

Bauer has always been a highly skilled SOB.
I was glad when Cleveland got rid of him, although the salary dump was indicative of where the team was heading.
So next year he will be making more than the entire Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles or Cleveland (name to be determined later) 36 man payrolls.

And snark that I am, I wonder if he might have more talent.

Top payroll? Why Los Angeles of course. $ 234,639,000. More than six times Cleveland's.

And the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. In the mean time ain't we got fun.

I think Baltimore might have one more to dump. Anthony Santander gets 2.1 million after arbitration, which he won.

Who in the heck is gonna be able to afford to go to these games if they are paying that type of money to a player like him? Not a home grown team player/franchise type.... not a good citizen/fan favorite /role model.... not even an everyday player.... not that great of a pitcher either......
I think the new labor agreement will have to adddress this type of madness. I'm not happy with the direction that the Pirates are going but this kinda deal is even worse than salary dumping. It's hurts the small market teams and their fans.

Another feature of the above is the majority of teams have at least one player who makes more than they spend on their entire affiliated minors. Buy stars instead of developing players.
Personally I am tired of Cleveland developing players to send them to $$$$ teams when they get good. And I am sure fans of other teams have similar feelings.

So. Almost no developmental leagues. Majors cutting off minor league teams.
Even the unaffiliated minors are getting the shaft. I saw that the St. Paul Saints are now affiliated with Minnesota.
So they grab the best known unaffiliated, that I treasured for it being run wacko by the son of Bill Veeck, at the same time they kill their feeder network.
It used to be that a few moneybag owners seemed to be in the business for the fun of it. Now? Nope.

As much as I hate privilege I wish that some billionaire, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Larry Page or one of their ilk would give "MLB" a run for their money by setting up truly independent minors and paying those players a living wage.
In simpler times it's happened.

Segue: Actually I would leave out Musk. He is more than a little wacko & and is seemingly a contrarian for the fun of it, both politically & re Covid... but he is already doing things for our space effort that the government does not.
Which I like, as space oriented as I am. The govt has more important things to do with our money. And he likes Spaceballs so some of his wacko is well channeled.

I wouldn't want any of those folks that you mention to buy the Pirates. Musk is sitting on a bubble with tesla. I darn sure wouldn't want someone like fakebook founder mark sucaturd either...

This is exhibit 10,000 on why they need to strike and get a salary cap in baseball.

At most only 10 teams can actually compete. And only 4 teams can compete every year.

Spankees, Blowsox, Dodgers and now Mets.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

The Indians are a case example of a team that has been able on occasion to play over their heads. With pitching you can go far and overcome highly paid rental players.
Of course that was when they were closer to the median in salaries and had hotshots at the start of their careers. They almost all went away.
This year they'll bite the big one and be lucky to come in third in a not overly strong division.
Every year there can be a lowly team that clicks. But not consistently and rarely over John L's list of the usual suspects.

I just listed Musk above as one of several billionaires who could set up entire minor leagues with their spare change. And then I excluded him as he has other fish to fry.
I did not say that he/they should buy MLB teams. The Indians ownership, as is the case with many other teams, could easily double expenditures if they were willing to lose money in a small market investment.

I was thinking more of a personal whim/indulgence similar to Jeff Bezos having bought the Washington Post for 250 million (small change for him) and then being willing to bankroll its losses.

And preferably at the minor league level. The dodgers were bought a decade ago for 2.15 Billion by Guggenheim Management a financial group controlled by Mark Walter - but which has a lot of investors.
They are reportedly worth 3.4 bill. now.
The Yankees are still owned (55%) by the Steinbrenner family, which has a paltry 4 billionor or so $. Actually less than the Dolan family which owns the Indians. But I would bet that a bigger piece of the Steinb assets consist of the Yankmes

So there is money out there. If capitalism holds that it is okay for a few to have much more than the many, at least they could spend it to change the assumptions, and misdirection, of the game.
