Appalachian Trail in Virginia. Or almost every other piece of the length. Many are accessible after a short walk. I fell in love with its Vermont vistas.

"Most beautiful" is in the eye of the beholder. Hence I suggested the Trail as the views are (almost) overpowering, for 3,000 miles.

Even as I realize that mzpen made a shitty political comment re the birthplace of the Klan, any lookout in your mostly beautiful state would qualify.

I also like the Southwest. Have been trying to get miz Pogo to drive there to view the desert landscape (and to pick up her Christmas gift from two years ago, a Navaho rug from the Farmington auction)..

The Trail is mostly official parks. They might or might not be open. Pretty country though. My wife fell in love when she found out skeeters don't hang above 2000' feet. A bear wandered through our last campground. That was less endearing.

We had porcupines in addition to bears. Porkys eat anything, including john seats as they are salty. Official parks? Doubt it. But martin is pretty much under the weather and would probably only access places near the road, He can obviously check out
Another suggestion? Cape Cod. A little touristy unless you get off the main drag. We spent two vacations on Martha's Vineyard but had free lodging.

Not DC bawl.... Zach and the wife went there for his 5th grade school trip.... Said there was a lot of walking...... But Pogo's suggestion about Vermont is the kinda place that I'm looking for. Someone suggested maine, said it was just beautiful.....i've never been above NY as we went to Niagra Falls two years ago. My wife wants to go to rocky mountains and then to oklahoma where the Pioneer woman has her places....

I'm not going to fly, especially on delta right now so I'll be driving...

The walking in Maine and Vermont is straight up.

And down, and up and down and up and - - -
When the AT was set up in Vermont (and its predecessor, the Long Trail) they ran it along the ridge line as that was not used for farming and only rarely was logged. So for the first 100 south to north. you are climbing and then descending the Green Mountains, and then climbing and descending and so on. Then the AT jogs east and then north through New Hampshire and then into Maine. There, they don't make you climb much in the NH White Mountain range, but you are walking harder and more challenging terrain.

We walked on the Long Trail which goes from the Massachusetts border to the Canadian border. The bottom third in VT is also the Appalachian Trail, The Long Trail after they separated, was noticeably less busy and less weathered, as the AT attracts a lot more hikers. They have to do regular minor re-routing the AT due to hundreds of hikers walking along it in any given week of good weather. The slur on it is that it's one long mud pit from Maine to Georgia.

It took us a week of horribly sore muscles before we got in reasonable shape. And that was 40 years ago when we actually had muscles. The Green Mountains are the most weathered of the Appalachians, at least of its northern expanse. It's green (hence the name) through most of it. Beautiful vistas everywhere. We took a bus to a access trail and then walked 6-8 miles lugging our packs, uphill to the actual trail. There are places where you can park and then walk up and then hike, but that requires doubling back to get your car. Which is why we did busses at both ends.

On another trip we did a few days on the New Hampshire AT.

There are also places where you can hike up and camp without actually having to do much on the actual trail. I've been to the AT elsewhere but not actually hiked.
