Merry Christmas to you, too. These kids are pretty young, so I think the articles you'll see online will give you the best indicator on these guys. The Nats are claiming they're not that high on Crowe anymore, but who knows whether they're being truthful. I see The Pirates want to give Crowe a shot at the rotation in '21. Apparently The Pirates were most interested in the 19 yo kid, who I'm sure most Nats fans have never heard of or seen.

I suppose a major free agent question right now for Washington is whether or not the Josh Bell acquisition (and the pursuit of Carlos Santana) means they do not have it in the budget for Realmuto.

This trade is getting rave reviews from various Nats sites and why not when the upside is that he can come close to matching his 2019 numbers with 36 HRs and a .936 OPS and be an All-Star for us for the next two years. I haven't seen as much mention of his defense, which is terrible, this trade makes me wonder if Rizzo is expecting the DH to be made permanent in the NL this year. The other thing that concerns me is that Bell has only gone over .800 OPS that one season, which means that we could have picked up a middle of the pack hitter with no defense.

Overall you can't complain about a trade that brings a legit major league player for two mid level prospects. I just don't see it as a slam dunk steal of a deal.

Crowe isn't that young, he's projected to be a #4 starter as his ceiling, which might be the case on a weaker team. On a team that is deep with pitching like the Nats try to be he's more of a spot starter, so we didn't give up much there. Yean has the higher upside but he's so young it's a roll of the dice.

Some interesting quotes from The Athletic article about the Bell trade, Long started watching Bell's swing after the Nats made the trade, not before. Why would Rizzo make the deal without consulting with the guy who is supposed to have the most expertise on hitting in the organization? Rizzo also referenced a secret "plan" to improve Bell’s hitting, but it appears that the Nats' hitting coach is unaware of the plan because he needs to watch more film before figuring out how to advise Bell to adjust his approach. Are the Nats staff talking to each other and why aren't the beat writers asking these questions?

Quote
Long has watched 15 to 20 hours of Bell’s swings since the Nationals acquired the first baseman...The Nationals like the potential of a bounce-back campaign, and they have a plan for Bell that general manager Mike Rizzo glibly said Saturday wouldn’t be shared. Long, who has already reached out to Bell, will take about a week to get to know him and study more video before going in-depth and implementing it.

Bell is a hard worker. He has had problems keeping the swing that gave him the power. His dad is his coach and I hope the Nats will get him back on track....When he's right he's worth the price of admission....

Hopefully he can rebound like Dimitri Young when he came here, another big hitter/poor hitter who became a fan favorite. Big difference is that Bell seems like a good guy off the field.

Fangraphs has an article using advanced stats to show what we already knew from plain old regular stats, Bell was a good player who was great in 2019 and fell apart in 2020. No discussion of his defense. One interesting stat from the article, the Nats had 43% of their at bats taken in 2020 by players no longer with the team. We are going to look very different next year.

Crowe's a prospect. He's close to ready. He can step right into the Pirates' rotation.
