Progressives lack compassion and tolerance. Their self-aggrandizement is all that matters.

Rainey and our new TRIPLE H -- Harris, Hudson and Hand -- is a damn good back end. With Finnegan and Romero we've got a bullpen that's almost set and good to go.

You asked for it, you got it. Brad Hand. One hell of an off season so far. In a season when most of the league is taking a step back the Nats are matching the Mets and Yanks blow for blow.

MLBTradeRumors:

"After signing Hand, Washington’s projected payroll is up to $199MM, per Roster Resource. That’s a $12MM increase over last season’s figure (prior to prorating), so it’s not clear whether or to what extent ownership will greenlight further spending. The Nationals’ luxury tax ledger sits just below $196MM, Roster Resource estimates, $14MM shy of the first tax threshold."

Gotta assume they're now out of the Realmuto bidding but if so, I have no complaints. The Lerners have stepped up big time imo. Wow.

Really surprised at the payroll level they're at. $12MM up over last season -- they were ranked 8th in payroll last season despite no paid attendance, a terrible MASN deal and no stadium name rights deal. Back in the Fall I expected a payroll cut of $20M+ versus LY. If he makes the roster, you think loudmouth Doolittle will thank the Lerners for taking care of payroll the way they are? No, I dont think so either.

I'm surprised with the spending as well, very happy to be so. I've always thought that ideally the local franchises are treated like vanity purchases by ownership, so that they are less concerned with maximum profits and more concerned with bragging rights at the country club. As of now it appears that the Nats are one of a very small number of clubs where spending has not been affected by the Covid.

If this were a normal season with fans in the stands I would say that it is a good year to exceed the cap. With a hundred million in cap space opening up for next year now is a good time to go over for just a season before resetting next year.

Doolittle ran his mouth non-stop when the battle was raging between the players and ownership. He Kaepernick'd himself.

This board was overloaded with "Lerners are cheap" posts back from 2006 thru early 2010's. Their willingness to spend is impressive, especially in recent years when The Nats failed to consistently finish in Top 10 in attendance when they were spending like crazy.

I was leading the charge on the Lerners are cheap front back in those days. They were raking in profits from the national TV contract while keeping payrolls low. MLB changed the collective bargaining agreement specifically to stop teams from doing what the Nats were doing. There was no need to "build the right way" there was no need to tank for draft picks, "The Plan" was to maximize profits for a few years while the fan base was just happy to have baseball back. No complaints now though. The team has proven that you can buy a World Series and that's all I ever wanted. Now we need another one and it looks like Mark Lerner agrees.

Someone had an interesting take on Tommy LaStella, who's a left handed free agent 2B-3B. Dude made a mere $560k last season (I assume that's pre-pro rated).

Other than Turner, no real leadoff hitter exists on the roster. Sign LaStella for 2B -- guy seems to consistently put up strong OBP #'s (his splits suggest he may need to sit and let Harrison start against lefties). Garcia's only 20, so another season of marinading will be fine for him. And in that way, you've got a starting lineup of LaStella/Turner/Soto+ that makes much more sense than what they have now...

Sounds good to me, we need to do something to upgrade our infield, even if it is only a marginal improvement. At least make Kieboom compete for a job instead of awarding it to him.

Just dawned on me that La Stella is a former Cub, so if anyone knows about him it's Davey.

(Edit: in close to 600 games played he's stolen a whopping 5 bases -- oh well, Still not a bad leadoff guy but he'd clog up the bases some, too).

Realmuto supposedly resigning with Philly -- $23.5mm per year for 5 years, which will only take him thru Age 34. Not a bad deal at all for Philly.

Yeah, a Covid discount, Philly is betting on the vaccine, smart.

This move keeps them from taking a step back, but they are still looking at third place at best in the East.
