Monday at 4 PM is the trade deadline. Rizzo says the Nationals intend to be buyers. What do you think they'll do?

Great question. such a shame they can't trade draft picks. How does a contending team get better with no minor league scouting? Maybe one of the few teams at the bottom of the standings will do a salary dump.

Boston is likely to move guys. Arizona might. Pittsburgh almost certainly will. There are a few sellers. KC already moved former Nat Trevor Rosenthal to San Diego. They have Greg Holland and Ian Kennedy, who may be available. (It wouldn't surprise me if Miami is in on Kennedy, given the Yankee connections down there.)

What do they need most? A starting pitcher? Relief help? One more bat?

Checking the team stats it looks like Nats games must lead the league in runners left on base. Our hitters are 7th in MLB in OPS but only 21st in runs scored. While our pitchers are 29th in WHIP but 18th in giving up runs. In both cases I would expect the number of runs scored to increase to be more in line with the number of runners getting on base. So while it would be nice to add another good bat in the infield our desperate need is for starting pitching, 29th out of 30 is not going to get us out of last place.

Holt helps a little, but I'd like a "bigger" bat.

I think another pitcher or two would be useful.

The Pirates are about to win their tenth game, every team will have double digit wins and losses, this is the point of most season when I say that it is no longer early, that the standings now matter. With no wild card game the 8th seed faces the Dodgers in a three game winner takes all series, the Nats definitely have reason to hold out hope but they better get their shit together.

From Martinez:

Quote
"That being said, it is different. It’s one month you’re getting a player for, unless you get a guy where he’s going to have a multi-year contract or you’re trying to do something big. I don’t foresee us doing that right now. I like the guys we got. We got to keep playing hard.”

Unless you are trying to do something big? This is still a high payroll team that won the World Series and is three games out of the playoffs. Yeah, we're trying to do something big. Can't take the championship ring from the guy but I still wonder if he's all there.

Robbie Ray to the Blue Jays. 90 minutes left on the clock for Rizzo to work his magic.

30 minutes to the deadline. Rizzo is sitting on his balcony smoking a stogie thinking, if Lerner doesn't want to extend my contract then fuck him I ain't working today.
