With hundreds of players now without a contract and a few dozen cities looking to host a team I'd expect a healthy independent league to emerge.

As for the Nats, I'm really pessimistic about them signing anyone of note this year. With no fans and a third of their TV revenue cut they took a big financial hit and they already have one of the highest payrolls in the league. Only thing to hope for is that the season ticket renewal numbers remained strong and that the Lerners want to win another World Series as much as they want to profit off of the team. We'll see if Rizzo can earn his big contract this year.

Yeah I guess the ST renewal rate will be interesting to see. The financial circumstances of some of those ST holders have changed since Covid, obviously. Really gonna depend on how quickly the vaccinations get out there to everyone. I suspect teams are gonna need to be as creative as ever to get many previous ST holders back

With the Redskins leading their division, the Wizards suddenly looking like the best team they've had since the Arenas years, and the Caps always playing well, the Nats could end up watching the other three local teams all make the playoffs right after they had their worst season in a decade. I wonder if this puts any pressure on ownership to rebuild quickly to keep up with the neighbors.

Good call, yeah I wonder, too. Or maybe they're thinking that since they brought the city a championship that it's ok to suck for a little while because the honeymoon period is still intact. Tough luck for the Lerners, they didn't get a chance to enjoy the typical big attendance bump the year after winning a WS.

Yep, Covid probably impacted the Nats harder financially than any other sports franchise.

The head of the ticket group I'm in is offering two for one Nats Bucks. For a dollar I get two Nats bucks that can be used for tickets or concessions. Very tempting, but I already have a lot of them and I'm not sure of their worth. For tickets I suspect that the team won't allow me to combine them with other offers, so I'm better off taking advantage of deals offered during the season. Half price beers and hot dogs is a good deal but once you have a few hundred bucks worth it seems like enough.

VA is closing in on 300,000 covid cases. There's a new projection that 2021 could see 400,000 cases. I dont know about other states, but reports like this gotta make owners jittery and seems to play in to these reports that alot of teams are cost cutting. Lerners got zero paid attendance last season, suffer from a lousy TV deal, and get zero revenue from any possible stadium naming rights. So it's surprising to see these reports that they're checking out expensive guys like LaMahieu and Suarez, whose got $43m owed thru 2024. Not that I'm complaining.

The Covid numbers are much higher than what is being reported based on positive tests. From what I'm hearing from my niece and my friends' kids is that Covid is much more widespread in the colleges than publicized, nearly every single student has had it. What is happening is that many kids aren't getting tested or seeking out medial assistance because they don't want to be quarantined for two weeks when they typically feel better after a couple days.

The vaccines are about to become widely available in 8-12 weeks, I plan to get a shot as soon as it is available and then I'm done staying home. The only reason I can see to limit people coming into the ballparks at that point is to create scarcity of tickets in order to keep the resale prices from crashing.

I have a friend who's a nurse in California, her hospital is about 45 min from LA. She just got the vaccine. Her hospital is overbooked. Theyve been overwhelmed by their own patients + covid patients sent to them by hospitals up to an hour way.

I also plan to get a shot when it is available to me. Most surveys show that about 40% of the population will not get the vaccine. Cue Darwin, survival of the fittest, etc.

Last summer I asked my doc about hydroxychloroquine at the time the media were peeing their pants about it . He told me he had a bottle of it at home, in case anyone in his family got it. He explained that it was effective in treating covid IF the patient had just been diagnosed with it, and would recommend it to a patient if they fit that criteria. He was amused at the drive-by media who were acting like it was the equivalent of taking poison.

Carlos Carrasco signs up with the Mets and days later he's yakking about the World Series. Sure they got Lindor, but they also lost Cano, who was their best hitter last season and put up monster numbers. Want to see that collection of bad luck losers walk it like they talk it for a change.

Probably it will take them a couple years to click, if you have a top five payroll for five years there is a very good chance of winning the World Series, but the first attempts usually fall short. I'm glad we got our win before the window closed but we really need two or three wins to go down as one of the great teams.

I want Realmuto, and I want Suarez. And one more reliever.
