MLBTradeRumors.com:

Ryan Zimmernan: "I’m Still Deciding Whether To Play”

As most players prepare to report to summer training camp, longtime Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman writes in a guest piece for the Associated Press that he’s “still deciding whether to play” in 2020. Like many players throughout the league, while he’s not personally a high-risk patient in the event of a positive COVID-19 test, he has loved ones who are of greater concern. Writes Zimmerman:

When it comes down to it, it’s a decision not just for me, but for my family as well. I have a 3-week-old baby. My mother has multiple sclerosis and is super high-risk; if I end up playing, I can pretty much throw out the idea of seeing her until weeks after the season is over.

Under the health and safety protocols laid out by Major League Baseball and agreed to by the Players Association, Zimmerman wouldn’t receive service time or be paid, should he choose to opt out. Only players who are high-risk cases themselves, as determined by team medical personnel, are eligible for that benefit.

Zimmerman will be far from the only player making a decision of this nature in the coming days. High-risk individuals exist throughout the league, be it due to recent battles with cancer, preexisting respiratory conditions or any number of other risk-increasing conditions. The number of players with such risks is surely higher than most are aware of, and the number of players with concerns more in line with Zimmerman is even greater yet. There will very likely be some players who opt not to play in 2020, and Zimmerman provides a candid and thoughtful look at the factors he’s weighing in a piece that’s well worth a full read.

This past offseason, Zimmerman inked a one-year, $2MM contract to return to the Nationals for what would his 16th season with the only franchise he’s ever known. Foot injuries limited him to just 52 games in 2019 and likely impacted his performance at the plate, but he batted a combined .289/.350/.542 in 899 plate appearances from 2017-18.

NBA regular season has not even started, their players havent even scrimmaged yet, and 16 of its 302 players - 5% of its workforce - tested positive for Covid earlier this week.

This season is gonna be a mess, and it'll get really interesting if a high profile player in a major market like Betts, Judge, or Harper catches Covid.

Zimmerman said all along that he was concerned about playing and being separated from his family, he never did one of the when and where tweets, so I respect his decision to sit the season out. With his injury history taking a year off might help him heal fully for 2021. He could also sit out the July training sessions and all of the August games and join the team for the playoff run in September. Ten weeks of isolation from his family would be a lot less time than 18-20 weeks.

The NBA players are testing positive because they are going out around people, not because of playing basketball. If you are at risk anyway might as well play the games.

He would need to be active by September 15 to be playoff eligible.

Don't see him sitting out the season and then try to fly in like Superman for the playoffs. Cant successfully hit the On switch like that after not facing ML pitching for so long a time. And he doesn't strike me as a guy who's gonna sit back and watch his teammates grunt it out for the regular season while he's home watching Netflix. No player has done more for the Nats since '05 so I tip my cap to whatever he decides to do.

Doubtful this would happen but another option for Zimmerman would be to just play the 32 games at Nats Park and Camden Yards, he would do the hitting cage at home and even have his uniforms at home so all he'd have to do is drive to the ballpark and play. This would limit exposure risk to sitting on the bench while the Nats are at bat and he could wear an N95 for that.

Zimmerman and Joe Ross have both opted out for the season. Zim was not unexpected and the Nats have guys who can play 1B/DH but Ross could be the bigger loss. Now the Nats need a fifth starter.

Britt Ghiroli got the scoop on both players. She has been getting more inside info lately than any of the other writers who have been covering the team a lot longer.

Edit: He might not be done yet, MLB and the MLBPA are working on a rule change that will allow players who opted out to change their minds and opt back in. Currently this is allowed only if the player had a pre-existing condition but in Zim's case he does not.

Edit 2: Zim isn't giving up much, he'll be a FA again next winter and $2M is a small amount for someone with $140M is career earnings. Ross is giving up $1.5 million, he's earned $5.5M in his career, but the bigger loss for him is a year of FA eligibility, he'll have two arbitration years left when he comes back in 2021. That can't have been an easy decision.

Suzuki Cabrera and Doolittle are the next dominos that could fall.

I'm not sold on Eric Thames so losing Zimm is tough, even with injury history. Ross, too. At this rate gonna hold off on doing a pre-season prediction thread until day before season starts.

Ian Desmond is now the fourth player to opt out, instead he'll be building up the little league program for underprivileged youth in his home town. One of the nicest guys in the league.

He got a lot of criticism for passing on the Nats $107M offer for seven years, 15.2M per year ending in 2020. But since then he has signed $95.5M in contracts through 2021 so $11.5 plus a year lost. However, the Nats offer contained an unknown amount of deferred money which would have lessened the value of the offer, so he might have come out even. The Nats ended up fortunate that he left, as his numbers have dropped over the past few years. Had he been with the team still in 2019 he'd have been the fourth outfielder and his salary would have blocked the rest of the bench depth.

Saw Desmond at the '05 RFK exhibition game against the Mets. Scrawny beanpole little dude who came in late innings. Remember thinking to myself what the hell is all the commotion about with this kid. But gotta hand it to Desmond he bulked up and hit his potential....but like the case with Jordan Z, Rizzo looks good now for letting Ian walk.

Edit -- Desmond says inner cities are not encouraging "minorities" to play baseball. ESPN excerpt : Desmond said his mind started racing during a recent visit to the Sarasota baseball fields that he played on as a kid. He wrote about how they looked run-down and neglected and how important youth baseball was for him growing up.

Sorry Ian, towns in Puerto Rico and Central America turn out tons of kids who want to play MLB. And you go to those towns and they make Sarasota Florida look like Beverly Hills in alot of cases. I'm all for little league development in urban areas, but there's other issues at play, too. Like Demand vs. Supply.

And now Welington Castillo opts out. Minor league depth guy. Would've been nice to have a vet in case anything happens to Suzuki or Gomes.

Doolittle, obviously not happy unless he is complaining about something, is now whining on social media that he is unsure about playing this season.

Freddie Freeman tests + for covid. David Price opts out of the season. Mike Trout admits he's nervous about playing...here we go, we knew this was coming.

Two Nats (players or staff) have tested positive. Lots of calls to cancel the season. I wonder if the guys who tested positive caught it earlier because of the MLB testing.

This sucks, I want there to be a season because I think that the players are just as safe playing baseball as they would be staying home where they'd be with friends and family. But there is a damn black cloud over everything.

The MLBPA foolishly wanted a 112 game schedule that wouldve carried the season way, way past October and deep into the flu season. How ironic to hear all of the pissing and moaning about Covid from players now in EARLY JULY.

Yeah, some of these guys watched too much riot coverage and decided that they were part of the oppressed working class.

This is awhille back: some Redskins player was pissing and whining about the "challenges" pro athletes have. Sonny Jurgensen heard it and laughed and said "Wait til his football career ends and he has to enter the real world".

Oh shit, I hope they get better quick. For all the hype about how the virus is spiking in the US I'd say that the players are a heck of a lot safer here playing baseball than in their home countries.

I guess since practice just resumed that they're here in US? So those guys go into quarantine for 2 weeks -- no hitting etc until only a few days before season starts.

MLB should set up a quarantine practice facility. A place where guys who've tested positive can stay isolated and have access to batting cages and other facilities. No need to social distance if everyone is in the same situation.

In any given year you could safely create a prediction thread months before the baseball season starts. But this season? Just no way. Maybe create it the night before the Yankees game. Very brutal, losing Rendon and Zimm hurts, but good thing this team has alot of vets who can step in and lead the youngins.

Two weeks before opening day. Virtually no news out of training camp other than Covid testing. Until the games start there can be no good news, no games won, just bad.

Well some news, the players got their rings, good for them, but bad that the fans weren't there.

I keep seeing pics of the players this week wearing masks. They're not required to wear masks during regular season games are they?

It now takes in many cases up to (or over) a week to get Covid test results back in the "real world", yet the players are peeing down their legs that they dont get back instant results -- please. Surprised Doolittle hasn't complained that the Lerners have not built an onsite lab for the players at the Park. Maybe Doolittle will start a GoFundMe page for personal sanitizer stations that Hale and Henley operate at 1B and 3B.

I'm not sure. My kid's little league is practicing and they are distancing but they aren't wearing masks on the field or on base. Everything I've read says that you are safe outside unless someone directly coughs or sneezes on you. The ballplayers look like chumps with their masks on.

Buster Posey is out. I can't begrudge a guy for sitting out this season but he waited until 13 days before the opener. A little late with the notice.

Oh, I didn't know that, now I look like an asshole, although based on that info I'm not sure why he even considered playing ball this year.

the giants have a hot shot catching prospect in the minors who's been promoted to replace posey. who knows, 2020 might go down as the Year of Wally Pipp.

Britt Ghiroli is reporting that the Nats and Dodgers are at a disadvantage due to local laws that require 14 days of self quarantine for anyone coming into contact with someone who is Covid positive. So we could lose players for a quarter of the season even if they never test positive.

Ghiroli has become the top beat writer for getting info from the team beyond official press releases. But she's also become the top cheerleader for calling off the whole season. Take the good with the bad.

And now Wander Suero and Roenas Elias go on the IL, no reason given. This is starting to resemble a drum kit slowly falling down a long flight of stairs.

Elias and Suero going down is a significant blow, just when Rizzo had finally built a quality (and deep) bullpen. They had Doolittle, Hudson, Harris, Rainey, Guerra, Elias, Suero, maybe one more (probably Fedde or Voth, whichever one wasn't going to be in the rotation.) Now they hve to rely on pitchers like Kyle McGowin, Kyle Finnegan, James Bourque, Ryne Harper, adn the like. (Oh well, at least Aaron Barrett is likely getting a shot to complete his comeback.)

Hitting coach Kevin Long just got out of quarantine. That 14 day waiting period that DC is mandating for anyone exposed to a potential Covid carrier is ridiculous and can't be legal. How can the city prevent people from earning a living just because they might have been exposed. At most a week after exposure should be plenty of time if you have no symptoms, particularly if you test negative.

The Nats are providing the players with pre-made meals at home and on the road so they don't have to go out to eat. (More jobs created by the players returning.)

Ali Modami has opted out for the season, he's the batting practice pitcher, known for his tireless arm. Not a familiar name but probably a familiar face for most fans. I'm not sure how easy it is to replace a human pitching machine.

@JimBowdenGM
I asked an NL GM if a player who has opted out from the season if he could opt back in say in mid-september if team was in a post-season position. He said that issue has not been clarified yet by the league and union.

Wonder who the NL GM was that Bowden called? Interesting that Zimmerman and Ross could end up being eligible to rejoin the team the day before the playoff roster requirement.

excerpt this morning from mlbtraderumours --

there is a notable carve-out for those players that are deemed personally “high-risk” for coronavirus infection. Such players — who receive salary and service time even if they opt out — are permitted to submit a request to return. Per Jayson Stark, there’s some kind of process involving team physicians and a joint committee to determine whether to honor the request. (Precisely what steps are required and what factors are considered isn’t entirely clear.)

So, what of players not placed in the personal “high-risk” category? They’ve got to make an in-or-out choice, for the moment. But Stark notes that there has at least been some amount of chatter surrounding the idea of creating a path back to participation in 2020. Again, it’s not clear what that might entail — e.g., whether the player would need to demonstrate some change in circumstance to justify the change of heart.

The Talk Nats blog is reporting that Soto, Robles, and Garcia will be returning tomorrow. Also noted was that the DC rule that prevents players from working for 14 days after a possible exposure will also impact visiting teams. So the Yankees might have to be without Chapman when they come to DC. Flipping this the other way, Nats players could be in a situation where they are eligible to play road games but not home games.

It looks like there is some kind of negotiation going on.

If things are better come September 15 (this year's postseason eligibility deadline), there might be a way. As of now, there isn't, but they're talking about it.

The season is getting more bizarre with additional details like this, which could cost a WS for a team.

With Welington Castro out, wondered if Rizzo was gonna check in on Jose Lobaton for emergency catcher depth. But he signed with Cubs yesterday.

This is huge in lieu of a 60 game season. No wonder the Nats want out of DC this season.

A player on a 14 day IL list is a HUGE facor: being out 14 days is the equivalent of FIVE weeks if there were a 162 game season. Wouldn't be surprised if the team that wins the NL East is the one with the fewest covid cases.

The Nationals announced that they have released veteran left-handed reliever Fernando Abad. The club also added infield prospect Yasel Antuna to its 60-man pool, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com tweets. Washington now has 57 players in that group.

The Nationals signed Abad to a minor league contract in December, but he didn’t participate in their Summer Camp for an undisclosed reason. It turns out that Abad tested positive for COVID-19 when he arrived at camp, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. Fortunately, Abad was asymptomatic and has just finished his 14-day quarantine.

The 34-year-old Abad last appeared in the majors a season ago, when he threw 13 innings of 4.15 ERA ball and notched 6.23 K/9 and 2.08 BB/9 as a member of the Giants. He was far better at the Triple-A level, where he posted a 3.07 ERA and logged a tremendous strikeout-walk ratio (10.0 K/9, 0.8 BB/9) in 44 frames.

While Abad hasn’t pitched much in the majors over the past couple seasons (he didn’t at all in 2018), he has been successful with a few teams – including the Nationals in 2013. He’s the owner of a lifetime 3.67 ERA with 7.62 K/9 and 3.16 BB/9 across 330 2/3 innings.

Antuna, now 20 years old, left the Dominican Republic in 2016 to sign with the Nationals for a hefty bonus of $3.9MM. He has since split his time between rookie and Single-A ball. Although he missed all but three games last year because of Tommy John surgery and lower body injuries, Antuna’s still regarded as one of the Nationals’ most promising prospects. Baseball America (No. 9), FanGraphs (12) and MLB.com (12) each place him near the top of Washington’s system.
