The Pirates are ahead of the Reds in number, if not in any other way. They traded infielder Gift Ngeope to the Blue Jays, and claimed some marginal players -- Nik Turley, Sam Moll -- off waivers. Towards the end of last season I mentioned that I could see the Pirates, who had everything go wrong in 2017, as a 90-win team if things went right. At the moment, Neal Huntington doesn?t seem to agree, as rumors have it that the Pirates are working on a trade of Gerrit Cole to the Yankees. I don?t really see a fit: The Pirates shouldn?t trade Cole to the Yankees without getting Gleyber Torres back, and the Yankees shouldn?t trade Gleyber Torres in a Gerrit Cole deal. (If the Yankees are willing to deal Torres, use him to get Chris Archer.) I guess there are ways to make a larger deal work, ones that involve Josh Harrison, or the Pirates somehow taking Jacoby Ellsbury, but on its face, a Cole trade between these two teams would probably be lopsided one way or the other. Pirates fans may hope their team continues to have a quiet winter. - Joe Sheehan Newsletter.
