Soo what? If that's the OBP Machine, I highly approve this move. High reward, no risk.

Hopefully, he doesn't Suk.
But seriously, I'd rather take a chance on somebody like this than pay a ridiculously inflated sum for Boras' Span. And I'm sure there are still other options out there to explore.

Sounds like a good signing to me. I'm not sure how his offensive numbers will translate to MLB, but at least they're looking for the right things. And there is certainly a big Korean community in this area. There are Korean churches, Korean grocery stores, Korean restaurants, Korean auto repair places, and assorted other Korean businesses. If he decides to live in the Catonsville-Ellicott City area, he should feel right at home, and could probably get by without ever learning a word of non-baseball English.

His nickname is "The Hitting Machine". His calling card is plate discipline ... and consistency! Became a regular at 19. Agent is Esther Lee and Wasserman Group.
Still looking for an answer to this question: If he's signed a two-year deal, does he become a FA after 2017 season? Or is he impacted by arb system, and we have control for additional years? I assume he becomes a FA. But I don't know the arb rules and how they are applied to certain signings (including Bundy), particularly International players.

For some context...
Eric Thames was a .305/.383/.508 guy across all minor league levels; hit .250/.296/.431 in MLB; and has put up back to seasons of .343/.422/.688 and .381/.497/.790 in the KBO.
Andy Marte was a .280/.350/.484 guy across all minor league levels; hit .218/.276/.358 in MLB; and put up a .348/.414/.569 season last year in the KBO.
Brett Pill was a .285/.332/.464 guy across all minor league levels; hit .233/.279/.404 in MLB; and has put up back to back seasons of .309/.352/.541 and .325/.372/.517 in the KBO.
Yamaico Navarro hit 64 HRs in 2,707 minor league ABs and hit 79 over the past two seasons in the KBO.

It's not all doom & gloom. More context:
Jung-Ho Kang hit .298/.383/.504 in 9 seasons in the KBO. Last year, for Pittsburgh, he hit .287/.355/.461 with 15HR in 126 games.
I'd take that for $3.5M/yr. And Kim's a better hitter than Kang based on a decade of each overseas.

And Kim's a better hitter than Kang based on a decade of each overseas. He certainly wasn't better in 2014. Kang's numbers were by far the best in the KBO, while you've got to look pretty far down the list to find Kim: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/japanese-and-korean-prospects-in-context/

Right, this is a low-risk, high-reward type deal. I think it was definitely worth the gamble.

Right, this is a low-risk, high-reward type deal. I think it was definitely worth the gamble. I agree. It's just that given the considerably lower level of play in the KBO, I'm not ready to pencil him in as a starter, or even as necessarily making the club out of spring training. This article says it's pretty much equivalent to high-A ball here, and functions mainly as a feeder into the Japanese leagues, which are somewhere between AAA and the majors here.

This is a big sumbee. I think they list him at 6'3" and 220 or so. A guy that big who is a contact hitter, could do some damage in OPACY.

I Googled him looking for images that would show size in context. The first result was some kid or mannequin pulling antlers off his head. Uhh. Never mind.

FanGraphs' Jeff Sullivan thinks Kim will look familiar to O's fans.I've got a player in mind. He's a left-handed-hitting corner outfielder, and the last seven years, he's walked just a bit more than the league average. He's also struck out a third less than average, while running an ISO 18% below the average. He's profiled as a mediocre defender. He doesn't play in Baltimore anymore, but he did for a while, and his name is Nick Markakis.
Markakis, over the seven years, has averaged a win and a half per 600 plate appearances. That's definitely not outstanding. But Kim could reach this level, and that level is worth more than $3.5 million a season. Plus, there's a hint of upside - maybe Kim hits for league-average power. Maybe he plays as a league-average defender. He's young, he's durable, and he's going to play in a hitter-friendly environment. I don't think it's a stretch at all to suggest that Kim could be a perfectly average all-around player, and as unexciting as that might sound, value is value. The Orioles have plenty of holes, and they need to be efficient if they want to address them all. A proven major-league version of Kim might've required $20 - 25 million over the same amount of time. Perhaps even more.

$7 mil for two years isn't an overpay for anyone these days, even if he's a bench player.

That was a very nice running catch, by Soo, in Great8's vid. If he plays a solid LF, he becomes far more likely to be the Opening Day starter in LF.
I've looked for Left Right splits, have not found anything. How does he fare against Lefties?

Former major league pitcher CJ Nitkowski played with and against him in the KBO in 2009-10, and has good things to say about him. Thinks he could be the steal of the offseason, too. FWIW: Nitkowski

I have a hard time imagining that this guy won't be an upgrade, plate discipline is a pretty transferable skill, you either have it or you don't, even if his OBP is only .340 in the majors he'll both be an upgrade and cheaper than equivalent native talent would have cost.
