They wanted him to replace Beeston (former Prez), who is being replaced instead by Shapiro (new Prez). Anthopoulos was GM, and had some of his decision-making ability taken away with Shapiro's contract. So DD wouldn't be getting the Prez job, he'd be getting the newly-reduced GM job. I don't think the title matters much, he'd have less power there than he does here. Gotcha, makes sense. We'll see I guess. It might still be more attractive to go to a team where the owner actually wants to spend money to compete, instead of having to fill its roster with guys like Travis Snider and David Lough.

Why would you assume DD is gone?

you know, great8, when i read that buck quote, i think we have to ask if the royals are having more fun. . . the thing that galls me from an oriole perspective is that, for years, i felt sorry for royals fans when the 'big market/small market' argument was trotted out. i though, 'oh, they're kind of like us, glory days in the 80s, but now their ownership won't spend or can't spend and they are doomed to the cellar.'
darn it, there is no structural reason why the royals can do it and the orioles cannot.
we sure were close last year. i hope we're not remembering last year -- no, i mean two years ago, i guess -- as a high-water mark for very long.

The Orioles were where they were the past few years primarily because of two extremely fortuitous trades and two high draft picks who worked out, not because Angelos spent money.
To hold this together, he'll have to spend big money on long-term contracts for a couple of people. Will he do it?

I expounded on the Royals thing in another post, I can't remember which one, but basically I said that the difference between the O's and Royals is good scouting and drafting. They have it, we don't. They sucked for as long or longer than the O's did, and early this morning, they benefited from all that sucking. Will the cheap owner pay to keep the team together when these guys start hitting free agency? Probably not, but at least they got a championship out of it. I'm green with envy.
