I liked DCFan for a bit, but he got old fast. He just whined on here constantly, especially when it came to insignificant topics. And the more pushback he got from others, the more he whined. He posted here for awhile, got driven off, came back, and got driven off again. Maybe he figured things out when he went over to WNFF.

I miss those guys. DCFan, Washington Senator, and the rest.

I wonder what ever happened to some of them. Even more recent posters like Natsman seem to have vanished.

Washington Senator is indeed missed. Solid baseball posts and great sense of humor -- anyone who lists his occupation as "Orgasm Donor" is A-OK in my book. His stoic defenses of Lerner and Kasten, which I didnt always agree with, were intelligent & entertaining. He wasnt politically correct, and that offended the thin-skinned libbys that were around then.

As for some of the others who left...probably file their departures under 'addition by subtraction'.

I'm not sure about those guys but I'm older than I was back in 2005, hard to maintain the same level of obnoxious posting as I head deeper into middle age. What this board needs is some school aged posters with an underdeveloped sense of common decency.

In the 2000's, the board was dominated by morons whose baseball "knowledge" = an over-reliance on stats or Google. Most of the stat guys were great with numbers but were clueless about Baseball 101 fundamentals. Remember a few of them posting saying that they were qualified to be a GM of a MLB team. Please. They couldnt manage a fish bowl.

Some Nats players back then posted on other message boards and built rapport with posters, so those players would be defended on here to the hilt. One player was Ryan Church. Guy was not even close to being the the Nats best player, but if you criticized him, you might as well have been criticizing Ken Griffey Jr. Still remember some of the posts defending Church when he was benched: he went into a slump so it mustve been the fault of the new hitting coach, or Church was benched in part because he wasn't a Bowden guy, or Frank could not understand Church's innate greatness,...funny stuff. And then there was every stat guy's wet dream, Brad Wilkerson. When he was traded for Soriano, you woulda thought the Nats were trading a Hall Of Famer for a bag of balls. I think that trade thread reached 10+ pages, easy.

Yeah, Ryan Church was a dope, great power though, he hit one of the two hardest hit HRs I saw at RFK (Bonds hit the other), a rocket to the 500 level. Church's uncle used to come on the MLB message board and get pissed at anyone who criticized him. Church could have and should have had a better career but I think that like Espi he thought of himself as a superstar and couldn't mentally adjust his expectations. I got his autograph in Viera in March 2005, only time I've ever collected autographs was the first ever Nats game I attended.

As far as wannabe GMs on message boards who rely on Google and Baseball Reference, that's me. Guys like Phil Wood have no respect for fan opinions but I find the best way to form my own thoughts is to read a bunch of counter arguments on a player rather than relying on one or two media "experts". Then right or wrong I run with it, I'm not on the internet to be dull.

I have found Phil pretty open. Do you watch his show? He and Mike are fun.

I used to listen to Phil during the post-game radio shows while driving home from the games. He came off as very condescending. Fans who questioned the team were told that they don't have the information or knowledge necessary to critique the Nats, that the manager and GM were doing the right thing. Sure, he was probably right in most cases, but it made for a lame radio show.

Even the best managers and general managers make mistakes. Do you think Connie Mack and John McGraw didn't make a managing error here and there? (Very few, granted.) Do you think all of Branch Rickey's moves worked? (About 99 percent of them, maybe.) So if they made mistakes, so do Rizzo and Martinez.

"Why didn't he use Doolittle tonight?"
"Doolittle's been used a lot lately, and he wanted to rest him. They have other relievers they believe in."

OK, legit, and maybe the caller didn't think of that. But it's still a valid, legitimate question.

There are some fans Phil will engage with. He knows me well enough to have a real conversation. He can be dismissive of people who are calling with off-the-wall stuff. (One caller on the TV show insists that there will be a team in Brooklyn in a few years.)

I've picked up on this as well, on NatsTalk with him and Mike Wallace. Agree, very irritating. Wallace has a pleasant disposition and a friendly face on when disagreeing with fans. Phil has that resting angry face. Guy never played the game to my knowledge, so there's that. His tendency to tow the Nats' company line on most issues is understandable, but gets tiresome...speaking of condescending, Santangelo's speech to the crowd at the WS parade made my eyes roll. That dude talks down to fans too much.
