He was their Brooks Robinson.I was lucky enough to hear his 3,000th hit-in 1974 against Dave McNally in Baltimore I believe. Memorial Stadium went wild.Great moment.

Baltimore guy too. Wow, if the Orioles could have gotten him, those great teams would have been even greater.

Graduated from Southern HS in Balt. Co. Tigers signed him in 1953; O's back in '54.I believe team had some sort of geographical pick back then. Can only wonder.

He once rejected a contract offer from the Tigers because he thought it was too much money, and he hadn't earned it.

and he went straight to the big leagues, as was required at the time (for 2 years) when teams gave out a bonus that high.

Thinking about what I actually remember about the Tigers from those days, it was Kaline and Harvey Kuenn.
I was born and raised in Boston. I paid attention to the Red Sox, but admit (to my embarrassment) that I was a fan of the Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Mantle, Moose Skowron, Yankees.
Our neighbor, for whatever reason given that he was from Virginia, was a Tigers fan. Having no kids at the time, he took me to several Sox/Tigers games.
I remember him telling me to pay attention to Kaline at bat (with men on base). I remember Kaline striking out - and thinking, as a snotty 8 year old, "Berra would have hit a home run."
How much we wish we knew what we were watching - and could watch it now.

When i was in middle school, a few of us collected baseball cards. It was the early 1980's when Fleer and Donruss were just getting started. One of my best buddies had a 1959 al kaline card that his dad had bought him at a card show.I didn't have a kaline card at that time and later got a 1965 one.....

What do y'all think about the talks of of MLB playing games in Arizona with no fans? I wouldn't mind them starting out that way, but I want to see the Pirates playing at PNC as soon as possible fans or no fans.

Better than nothing. I assume then minors will play too.If minors don't play this season, it's a killer for the Orioles' rebuilding efforts. They'll lose 2 yrs. at least, as players are set back in their development.

I second the thought. The Indians with a basically solid team have spent almost nada to improve it and have any chance for a championship. For years they have survived off their excellent minor league transmission belt. Next year they lose Lindor, their one superstar. The outfield is pretty young, but barely league average. By mlb standards the rest aren't exactly spring chickens. I can't claim that I know what our minors are like, but for years they have been our saviors. We are next to last in payroll in our division.
Unless Dolan sells the team to someone willing to spend $$$ they will fade to the level of, if you pardon the expression, the 28th team payroll Pittsburgh. Or the dead last payroll, O's. This is not a slur. It is just a recognition of what has happened to once great teams while periodic also rans like the Astros have improved.
