Another Expo in the Hall, Cool

Former Expos outfielder Larry Walker is officially a Hall of Famer — and rightfully so.

Walker learned just after 6 p.m. Tuesday that he received 76.6 per cent of votes from members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, which was enough to get him into the Hall of Fame in his 10th and final year on the ballot. Players need at least 75 per cent for induction and Walker will now join former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter as the only two members of the Class of 2020 for the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies on July 26 in Cooperstown, N.Y. Jeter received 99.7 per cent of the votes, with one writer inexplicably leaving him off the ballot.

Walker, who is from Maple Ridge, B.C., becomes only the second Canadian Hall of Famer, joining pitcher Ferguson Jenkins of Chatham, Ont., who was inducted in 1991.

Walker, 53, played 17 seasons in the major leagues, including his first six with the Expos. He will certainly enter the Hall of Fame wearing a Colorado Rockies cap after playing 10 seasons there, winning the National League MVP award in 1997 and three batting titles (1998, 1999 and 2001).

It looks like he's going in as a Rockie. I wish he would go in as an Expo.
