Touched and moved by the pre-game ceremony.

Has MLB announced any riots scheduled for future games ?

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 23/07/2020 23:17

Oh my God. Here we go with Scherzer. Should have been three outs though if we could have turned a double play on that grounder.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 23/07/2020 23:27

Eaton homers, and shuts up the Yankee lovefest by the ESPN crew. Apparently Gerrit Cole is God, and Max Scherzer is some schmuck. Putting ESPN on permanent Mute and looking for nats radiocast.

Ball is flying in this heat. Wish they'd drop the sub horn, it sounds terrible. Just stick with Bustin' Loose.

Angel Hernandez with the horrible call to end the first inning of the season.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 23/07/2020 23:56

I thought that Stevenson was supposed to be good in the field. A little slow getting to the ball and then a crap throw in to third.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 24/07/2020 00:33

This Yanks line up is loaded. We need a better showing from Strasburg on Saturday.

Scherzer's back to throwing for strike outs, getting his pitch count up and not being able to go deep in the game. Ten Ks is not good when you are giving up a run per inning.
Posted By: SilverFox1

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 24/07/2020 11:00

The first game gets cuts short by rain. Typical start for an Effed Up season like this.

Max's struggles in the 1st inning do get frustrating at times. No shame in getting 1 run off of Gerrit Cole, but damn that lineup is awfully Orioles-like without Rendon-Soto-Zimm. The next 2 weeks without Soto may be ugly -- why didnt Davey put MAT in LF instead of the giraffe Stephenson, and where was Kieboom?

Stanton has always owned the Nats, glad his ass is outta the NL East.
Posted By: PowerBoater69

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 24/07/2020 15:42

Good question about Martinez using Stevenson over Taylor. Stevenson had two Ks with men on base and a bad throw to show for his night.

We're the World Series champs but the Yanks sure looked like the more impressive team last night. We really need Soto back.

I wish that rain had stopped the game an inning earlier, they would have had to finish the game today or this weekend. Cole would be gone and we'd have had five innings to get back in the game. Oh well, Stras and Corbin need to win the series for us.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 25/07/2020 20:46

Remember when the Nats were the best team in baseball? That title is slipping away. Strasburg scratched tonight to to numbness in his throwing hand, Fedde is starting. Kieboom is the DH tonight, he can't play defense because he has groin pain playing in the field. This team might be lucky to start out 19-31.

Reverse lock. The Nats have everything go wrong and still crush the Yanks.

It'll be a hot one tomorrow as we try to win the series.

Hope the 16 team playoff format will help them get into the playoffs if they get hit hard by injuries and Covid. I like our chances with Max-Stras-Corbin in November.

They signed Josh Harrison, so I wonder if the Kieboom injury is worse than they're lettin on, or they want insurance for Starlin Castro. Kendricks needs to stay at 1B or DH, period. It is a 60 game season but still, he needs to stay away from 2B, and avoid alot of back-to-backs if possible at his age

Yep, makes me question Scherzer's status as team ace as we've been pitching a heck of a lot better these last two games against the same line-up.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 26/07/2020 18:35

i dont wanna take away from what max did last season and in the WS, but after strasburg's ridiculous performance in the WS, i'm surprised that Davey has not been asked about this. otoh, max will probably be given a long, long leash to stay as the team Ace.

First 7 games this season at Nats Park, then a brutal stretch of 15 out of 20 games on the road. Sure, home field advantage has been lessened this season, but Nats really need to cash in on these home games.

FP had it right, we are really missing Soto.

At least Hudson is holding them so far. Then Cabrera, Robles, Gomes, and Taylor, combined for zero hits so far today, just need to get one run across.

Watched Davey pull Corbin, and it seemed like Corbin had some words for him, and cant blame him. Surprised to see him pulled. The guy get pulled in the 7th inning after giving up his SECOND hit of the game. On only 75 pitches ?! Makes absolutely zero sense.

Nats at 1-2 and imo davey needs to explain why Corbin is pulled after 75 pitches. Unless the heat had taken a toll on him.

Edit -- in the presser, Davey contradicts himself. Sez he thought Corbin's pitches were rising, but acknowledges that Corbin insisted he was fine during the mound chat.

Fp took Thames to task for standing on 2b to tag up on a Robles double off the RF wall...a No No with 1 out. He wouldve scored easily if he travelled halfway to 3b to watch it instead.

Thames booked it to make that run, Hale better watch out when the big man turns third, there's no brakes that are going to stop his momentum.

I'm a big fan of Thames wearing the big elbow pad and shin pad. For years I've been calling on the Nats to make those mandatory for our hitters. Too many guys have been hurt getting hit by inside pitches and foul tips. The Nats should wear 100% of the pads allowed by MLB, protects from injury and gives the batter confidence to stand in the box against the hard throwers.

1-3, not a good start for the defending champs.
Posted By: SilverFox1

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 28/07/2020 12:36

I hear ya. Howie's lifetime career BA is close to .300, and Castro seems more like a #5-6 hitter. And Thames seems ideal hitting 4th. Losing Soto really impacts the *LRLR* lineup approach.

Nats sign Josh Harrison - who plays anywhere - shortly after Soto's positive test results. Sounds like Rizz aint that happy with Difo, Stephenson...or both. I'm all for developing young guys, and those 2 have had alot of chances. Or maybe too short of a season to experiment with bench guys like them.
Posted By: PowerBoater69

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 28/07/2020 14:40

I haven't checked how the short season affects the cap but the Nats were under by a bit going into spring training, hopefully we'll be able to upgrade more than just Harrison. It would be nice to know if the DH is permanent so that Rizzo can start rebuilding the roster with more specialists.

The expanded playoffs will mean fewer teams looking to make trades. It would be nice to replace Zim and Ross.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 28/07/2020 21:19

As requested, Kendrick batting third. But did anyone ask for Bonifacio? Looks like a spring training travel lineup.

SS Trea Turner
RF Adam Eaton
1B Howie Kendrick
3B Asdrubal Cabrera
DH Eric Thames
2B Starlin Castro
CF Victor Robles
C Yan Gomes
LF Emilio Bonifacio
(P Austin Voth)

I was a big Tanner Roark fan but for tonight I'd like to see him get crushed.

Posted By: SilverFox1

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 28/07/2020 23:27

FP defends Nats by claiming errors are up all over the league due to shortened spring training, which is BS...at this point the nats have the second most errors in MLB -- 9 teams have 1 error or less this season. Bad new bears exactly.
Posted By: SilverFox1

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 28/07/2020 23:46

Turner gets hung up by the pitcher trying to steal 2nd. Bad News Bear run amok.

Doolittle: 1.1 IP so far. Dude has been practically nonexistent, and whether the issues with him are an injury or something else, dude has maxed out at only 89 mph. And then there's Tanner Rainey. 3 2/3 IP this season -- 6 k's . Zero hits allowed, zero runs allowed. 2 walks allowed and that was the rap against him pre-trade. But that dude is on fire right now.

Nats ERA is 2nd in NL at 2.73. Atlanta's is 3.91 (8th in NL), and that was WITH their ace who is now done for the season. If we face ATL in the playoffs, I like our chances whether we have home field or not.

Dumbass Bryce Harper: 5 k's in 13 ab's. Love it, the guy just sucks the life out of their payroll. Hope he keeps it up.

When the time comes would not mind seeing Rizzo get a good RH hitting 1B in a trade. That would let Howie strictly DH and minimize wear and tear on him.

Where did all these bullpen arms come from. Finnigan with a huge two outs. Might be time to put Doolittle at the back end of the pen.

Love stories like Kyle Finnegan. Has been a minor leaguer since 2013. Got called up for 1 inning in 2018 with Oakland but that's it for his Big League experience. That is the kinda guy you wanna root for.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 06/08/2020 00:58

The bullpen held them to two runs in eight innings (even with another Doolittle flop), but the offense doesn't show. Good thing the playoffs are expanded.

Doolittle blamed the interrupted Spring Training in part for not being in mid-season form. He and The Nats are either hiding an injury, or he has no earthly idea what his colleagues in the bullpen have done to date.

Martinez is a lame duck manager. I assume he feels safe with a World Series win in his pocket. But if the Nats miss the playoffs two out the three seasons how does that compare to Baker whose teams finished in first both years.

Getting crushed by the lowly Orioles is not the way to go.

So fed up with FP. Sure, I realize the guy is paid to be a homer. But like Phil Wood, he too often talks condescendingly to (and about) fans. And last night he yet again sounded more like a carnival barker from the Nats' damn Marketing Department. Last night's excuse: "Gosh, maybe Sean did not have access to the proper training facilities in order to be ready" -- Really?! WHY DIDNT HE?! We're seeing pitchers this season hit the mid 90s and more with no problem. But you say a guy who has made over $20 MILLION during his career cannot make it a priority to find the facilities in order to be the best that he can be? Besides, across the league pitchers are way ahead of hitters so far this season. FP = BS. With Larry Michael gone, FP is the undisputed Used Car Salesman King of DC sports.

Tomorrow they start a 10 games in 10 days road schedule. Nats have the 3rd worst record in the NL and are in sole possession of last place in the East. If they lose today and get swept in their HOME park by the AAA Orioles, cant wait to see what bullshite FP has up his sleeve for that.

Guy had an underwhelming 4.05 ERA last season, he sucks this year, and he turns 34 next month. He's an UFA and he made the Lerners look like assclowns by paying the minor leaguers. He's shoved his foot up his own ass.

Soto is so good, everything Harper was supposed to be. He needs to be here for his full career.

I've got mixed fee about the fake fans, it's less distracting without them. I'd have bought one though had they been offered. The Nats are making so much cash from Delta and the other seating area sponsors they may never let fans back in the ballpark.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 11/08/2020 00:27

unless the nats are up by a bazillion they need to keep doolittle in the bullpen. this team needs to win a series, he can sit his ass down.

Rizzo may be looking for leftys. Unless im mistaken, weve only got 2 LH'ers in the bullpen. Counting Doolittle, means we only really have 1 at this point. But Freeman's track record over past few years suggests hes not reliable either. He's been in half the games already so Davey shouldnt wear him out. Easier said than done when 14 of the next 17 games are against NL East clubs.
Posted By: PowerBoater69

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 11/08/2020 14:02

Also makes it tough on the pen when one starter opted out and our two aces have not been giving us as many innings as we need. Scherzer 13.2 in three starts, Stras 4.1 in one start, plus Sanchez 10.1 in two starts. We have to be near the bottom of the league in innings for starting pitchers. Only Corbin has been decent.

Rainey mows down the Mets in 1 2/3 innings on only 13 pitches, 10 of them strikes. If his control issues are in the past than we have a future closer here, hopefully. Been in 8 games already, needs a break.

Tanner Roark: 4.41 ERA last year, 4.58 so far in 2020. Love the guy but I dont believe he'll ever be more than a 4th or 5th pitcher in a rotation.

Reds fans on the MLBTR board mocked us when that trade occurred, since Rainey had a 24+ ERA in his 1st season in the Bigs in 2018 with Reds -- 7 IP, 12 BB's. In Rizz we trust.

Not a trade per se, but picking up Cabrera was a huge Rizzo move. Read that he leads MLB in RBI's since the day he joined the Nats last season.

Kudos to guy from the comments board at MLBTR who came up with this: This year he’s hitting .500/.538/1.167 with runners in scoring position and .360/.385/.720 with guys on base. That’s a small sample, but through all of last year (even counting his bad first half), he hit .328/.398/.537 with runners in scoring position and .295/.375/.514 with anyone on base.

They couldve given both teams a much needed day off today, and scheduled the suspended game to start prior to tomorrow's O's-Nats regular game, which starts at 7.

Or who knows, maybe MASN pushed MLB to run it tonite.

Ryne Harper gets sent down. Dakota Bacus joins the big club:

Harper, 31, was acquired from the Minnesota Twins this winter in exchange for minor league pitcher Hunter McMahon, and he got off to a good start in his first season in D.C., throwing 5 1⁄3 scoreless to begin the 2020 campaign before he gave up runs in two of three trips to the mound, allowing three runs on four hits when he faced the Orioles last weekend and a total of five runs on four hits earlier this week when he went up against the NY Mets in Citi Field.

“We just sent Ryne Harper down and brought up Dakota Bacus from the Alternate Site, so at this point we felt like Harper needed a break,” Martinez said at the start of his pregame call this afternoon.

“He’s going to go down to Fredericksburg, and Bacus has been throwing the ball really well down there, we got good reports from him, so we just wanted to bring up a fresh arm.”

Bacus, 29, will make his MLB debut the first time he gets into a game. A 2012 9th Round pick by the Oakland Athletics, the right-hander was acquired by the Nationals in a deal which sent Kurt Suzuki to the A’s on Aug. 23, 2013 and he re-signed with the organization following the 2019 season.

Harper, Martinez said, will be eligible to return to the club in 10 days.

“He has to go down — I say 10 days because — but he has to go down — unless somebody gets hurt, we can’t bring him back up before ten days, unless there’s an injury.”

I was going to express my lack of excitement for a 29 year old rookie but two scoreless innings is a heck of a first outing. Not much offense so far, would be nice to see him get the win.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 15/08/2020 13:02

Kieboom set a team record for assists by a third baseman, ten assist breaks the old record of eight. Big advantage for Kieboom was all the shifting, he'll get more assists as long as the team keeps positioning him in the batters hot spot.

Great debut for Garcia, a couple hits and a couple RBIs.

Coming into the short season my thought was that we have a good chance to make another run in the playoffs and go back to back. With injuries and opt outs repeating will be tough. As an alternative I would not be unhappy with a youth movement, the team needed to get a lot younger, maybe it's for the best to get that started. Of course we could do both and that would be nice.

I hear ya. Check out the graph in this link -- Nats have the Big 3 locked up for awhile. With controllable cheap talent (Soto, Robles, Garcia, Kieboom etc), I think they can compete for awhile. If the season gets ugly and they sell at the deadline, looks like the only expiring deals are with Suzuki and Cabrera -- wouldnt get much in return for either, unless AC keeps raking.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 15/08/2020 21:06

Just one more year of Scherzer. They really need to sign Soto to a long term contract. I'm worried that the Strasburg contract was a big mistake, he's a big guy and seems to get better with age but that's a ton of cash for a guy who is on the injured list quite a bit.
Posted By: SilverFox1

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 15/08/2020 21:21

I guess next year with Max will be interesting re: reupping. How is he pitching, what's the market read on him, how many years does he want, etc. My biggest concern at this point is extending Rizz.

Last year, Boswell came up with an interesting stat: Strasburg, despite his reputation, has actually started in something like 84% of all starts since 2014 -- good sample size. The 84% aint great, but aint horrible either. He's 31, and we all know the fountain of youth at some point runs dry. I still think they made the right choice in resigning him and letting Rendon walk. Giolito would sure help matters if he was still with the Nats. They have to be concerned that the pipeline of young pitching in the system is kinda average. Hope I'm wrong, cuz I dont follow the minors that often.

Soto at the 3 spot, he needs some ABs to qualify for the lead leader boards. Look at that lefty heavy line-up, I'm surprised that Martinez didn't swap Garcia and Kieboom.

The ball and strike have been terrible this year, Sanchez was ejected from the stands for arguing. With no fans the umps are hearing every the players are saying. Could be that this accelerates the implementation of robo ump.

Scherzer is pitching as efficient a game as we ever see from him, I like the low pitch count.

I turned on the Os broadcast and I've been enjoying the more subdued style. I don't dislike Bob & FP but they have non stop banter, sometimes I don't need a comedy routine.

Two weeks until the trade deadline. The Nats are only three games out of the playoffs and with the expanded format there is not much difference between the one seed and the eight seed. But in a season when most teams will be buyers it might be the best time to be sellers.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 17/08/2020 01:23

I'm not saying that these guys should be traded, just that they are candidates to be traded if the Nats decide to punt the season, they are all free agents after either this year or next: Eaton, Sanchez, Doolittle, Suzuki, Hudson, Gomes, Kendrick, Thames, and Cabrera. These guys will need to be replaced eventually anyway.

I just heard an interview on the radio, I'm not sure who said this, but it was noted that trades will be difficult this season because there are no minor leagues and no scouting so would Rizzo give up anything of value with an unknown commodity in return? Too bad MLB doesn't allow trading draft picks, the Nats could load up.
Posted By: SilverFox1

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 17/08/2020 10:18

Good point about trade difficulty this season. I guess as Ken Beatrice used to say, if Wayne Gretzky was traded, anyone can as long as the return makes sense. Eaton is the 1 guy in that group who is young and has been consistently productive when healthy and could bring a pretty decent return, but MAT and Stephenson cant fill his shoes. I guess first I'd like to see if Stras gets back to 100% and Sanchez gets fixed. If the team gets its act together I still like their chances to make some noise in October with that starting rotation.

Wonder what Lerner and the other owners think about 2021 at this point in terms of the amount of payroll to commit -- a) what will consumer buying habits be like at the park then and what will the vendor lineup look like, b) how many fans wont return to the parks next season, c) how are season ticket sales for '21 pacing, d) when a vaccine becomes available when do consumers decide that life returns to normal, etc and so on....

So tough, teams will definitely be looking for short term deals with the future so uncertain. Let's see if Rizzo can navigate the new reality better than the other GMs. Hopefully all of those Nats Park ads will help the team stay competitive with the rest of the league.

RE: Nats being sellers -- This is the weakest NL East in years. Atlanta is leading the East BUT their starting pitching is a joke: lost their ace for the season, demoted 2 starters, and there's speculation that guy last night Toussaint might be the next starter demoted. Dont care how great their bullpen is, those guys are gonna burn out. And things are so bad they're possibly gonna go all-bullpen tonight. The Marlins are pretenders...so not sure the Nats should be sellers at the trade deadline, unless they do a complete nose dive in the next week against Atlanta and Marlins.

At his age I consider him only a part time player, which reduces wear & tear on his body. Even if he only played 30-35 games a season that would still be better than seeing some of the guys this season who've hit in the 4-5 slots. LY 3-6 slot hugely better than TY 3-6 slot.

Even if they signed Rendon theyd have a guy playing on a deal until he's 37, and he's gonna either break down or succumb to injury way before then. Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 24/08/2020 11:48

-- MLBTradeRumors.com excerpt re -- Rizzo on the trade deadline:

The Nationals “are still assessing what we have and the deadline,” GM Mike Rizzo told reporters (including the Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty and MASNsports.com’s Byron Kerr) today about the club’s plans heading towards August 31. But while the Nats may not have their shopping list quite ready, Rizzo made it clear that his club is planning to be buyers.

“We’re here to win the World Series this year, and that never changes in my mind or in [manager Dave Martinez’s] mind or the owner’s mind,” Rizzo said. “We’re here to win, and we’re very, very competitive. If we see a place to improve ourselves in a deal that makes sense for us, we’re never afraid to pull the trigger.”

Today’s 9-3 victory over the Marlins improved the Nationals’ record to a modest 11-14, though like virtually every team in baseball, Washington is still in the playoff race in this shortened season. Rizzo doesn’t “think it’s anywhere near too late to make adjustments, but we have to play better,” recalling how the 2019 Nationals rebounded after a 19-31 start to the season.

“I have seen flashes of brilliance and mediocrity,” Rizzo said about this year’s Nats. “We have got to be more consistent….You got to play clean baseball, championship caliber baseball. We went through this last year and cleaned it up rather quickly after a slow start. We have to do the same thing now.”

Rizzo is no stranger to memorable trade deadline swaps, perhaps most notably the acquisition of Daniel Hudson at the 2019 deadline given Hudson’s key role in Washington’s 2019 World Series title. While the Nats’ bullpen was a glaring flaw last season, however, this year’s team doesn’t necessarily have such an obvious weak point, apart from maybe a starting rotation that Rizzo is bullish towards.

“We get calls about our starting pitching all the time and we feel very, very fortunate that we have that type of depth of young arms that can contribute at the big league level,” Rizzo said. “Very excited about the prospects of these young kids coming up. You look at the Voths and the Feddes, the way they performed last year in a world championship season and helped us the ship afloat and pitch extremely well in a pennant race. You run guys out there like a Wil Crowe and Seth Romero, who have shown their stuff plays in the big leagues. That is very positive news for us moving forward.”

If a new starter perhaps isn’t likely, acquiring more relief help would certainly seem like more of a possibility, and Dougherty also believes “a low-cost veteran bat would help.” The likes of Adam Eaton and Eric Thames have struggled at the plate this year, and Starlin Castro will likely miss the rest of the regular season due to wrist surgery. On the plus side, Juan Soto and Trea Turner have been tearing the cover off the ball, rookie Luis Garcia has filled in nicely for Castro at second base, and Asdrubal Cabrera has hit well to pick up the slack at the corner infield spots from Thames and Carter Kieboom.

I had tickets to two Phillies games that were originally scheduled for this weekend, I was going to boo Harper without mercy. But the way we're pitching it could get ugly. Only thing that matters is that Soto needs to keep his average over .400.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 25/08/2020 11:04

Wouldn't blame you if you booed the home team either. Losing a 5 game series to the woeful Marlins at home in a key part of the season is sickening.

Voth is burning up the bullpen. He has not gone deep in a single start this year, and Davey vented about him (in part) at the postgame presser. Rizzo needs to ask himself how many starting pitchers does he REALLY have right now for a playoff run. Looks like at least 20 teams are in the playoff hunt, and a bunch of them need SP which drives up the bidding wars even more. Good luck to Rizz with that.

Harper wins it for the Phillies with an RBI single and he did it without bunting. Philly fans cant be happy seeing him bunt in Game 1 with 2 runners on board. You dont do that if you've signed a $330 million deal and you're having an MVP-ish year.

Worst team in the AL just took the series from us. Rizzo says we are going to be buyers, if that is the case we need two starting pitchers not just one.

This season couldn't be worse for the Nationals finances, in a season when they were going to get a big attendance bump I know a number of people giving up their season plans. How are they going to sell fans on spending thousands of dollars when next season is uncertain for having fans in the ballpark, the Nats are in last place, and the stock market seems to be the better place to put any extra cash right now.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 30/08/2020 22:20

How much do you give up for a player who may only help you for the 4 weeks that are left in the regular season?

The Nats came into the season with only the #12 team payroll in MLB -- the first time they've been out of the Top 10 in 4 or 5 years. I would prefer to see Rizzo ID an expensive SP on an expiring deal and "help out" the other team by giving that team suspects instead of prospects. Too lazy to look and see how many guys like that are available.

Or a starter and a reliever. I wonder if the Nats might be under the radar on Robbie Ray. Rizzo still knows a few people with the Diamondbacks, and Ray started in the Nationals organization. Maybe get them to put Archie Bradley in the deal.

The Braves acquired ex-Nat and journeyman Tommy Milone over the weekend. He is definitely NOT the answer to their SP problems: prior to this season, he's averaged a 5.93 ERA since 2016.

Braves sent the O's 2 prospects, whose identities wont be known til after the season. TWO prospects traded for Tommy freaking Milone, who becomes a UFA after the season. Wow.

If teams are willing to overpay, we lock down Stras, Scherzer, Corbin, Turner, Soto, Garcia, and Robles, everyone else is available for a team ready to make a strong offer.

The Nats are 3.5 games out of the playoffs but they need to pass six teams to get there.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 31/08/2020 14:07

Doubt Rizzo is gonna punt and start selling 48 hours after he told the media they werent, unless he was trying to send bullish signals to potential buying partners. Even in the final year of his deal they didnt listen to any offers for Harper at the TD. For all of this talk about trading for prospects when sellers have all of this leverage, look at what they got from Chicago in the Daniel Murphy-Matt Adams trade at the deadline: a low ceiling A leaguer Andrew Monasterio, who ended up getting dealt to Cleve, and appears to have flamed out. Sure, Eaton has another year on his deal, but trading him creates yet another hole next season that MAT and Stephenson cant fill.

Looks like theyre actually 3.0 GB the final seed, but whatever....they have to decide today, so do not sell imo. Hopefully they realize The NL East (aside from Atlanta) is damn weak. In the past 10 games (Atlanta aside)no one's playing above .500. If 2 teams in the East get hot, the East could have 3 playoff teams. If the Nats wake up in September and just get the #8 seed, they prob play the Dodgers in the 1st round. Not suggesting they'd beat LA, but I like any team that has Max and Corbin starting in a short series. In the playoffs, crazy stuff happens

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 31/08/2020 16:25

MLBTradeRumors excerpt from this morning:

The Nationals are “looking to buy today,” hears The Athletic’s Jayson Stark from teams that have talked to the Washington ballclub. This is a bit of an advancement from what we heard on Saturday from MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, who said, “If they do anything, it’ll be buy.” The Nats are three games out from second place in the NL East, currently their easiest path to the playoffs.

In an article Thursday, MLB.com’s Jessica Camerato suggested a multi-inning reliever, ideally with the ability to handle lefties, could be a reasonable target. GM Mike Rizzo expressed comfort with his starting pitching depth – even sans Stephen Strasburg – on a call with reporters over a week ago, but that hardly rules out the pursuit of a starting pitcher. Stark speculates that the Diamondbacks’ Robbie Ray could be a fit. Rizzo presided over the Nationals’ drafting of Ray in 2010, an excellent find in the 12th round.
Posted By: SilverFox1

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 31/08/2020 16:29

Robbie Ray going to The Nats has been discussed at various places for awhile this month, for obvious reasons. Even with Ray being a UFA after the season, there's about 10 teams who also need SP help, and the bidding could get intense. Dont know that The Nats have the ML talent to compete here.

Btw, Rizzo "expressed comfort" with the starting pitching last week -- ?! -- now THAT's funny. Even homer Bo Porter was jumping all over Voth in yesterday's post-game show.

Watched espn's TD coverage today. Based on chats with GM's across the league the biggest topic of concern was adding to payroll when there's so much uncertainty about the vaccine, what team gate revenues will look like in 2021, will there be any fans allowed, etc. And iirc only 3 Nats are coming off the payroll after the season.

Random shit:

boswell spoke with a bunch of docs who specialize in carpel tunnel surgery -- all of them believe Stras should be back 100% for '21. Which is good news. They will be a playoff contender with him and Castro.

and he had a good idea about the offseason: with the nats power void and eaton's sliding output, trade eaton and sign a big bat OF in FA -- problem is that the only *notable* FA's i see with decent+ power are 3b justin turner (turns 35 this Fall -- if you sign him, do you keep Castro at 2b and send down Garcia?), OF Marcell Ozuna, and C Realmuto, who will cost a fortune. Stanton has an opt out with the Yankees, and the rest of the outfielders are problematic (i.e. George Springer has had great power in the past, but he's fallen off a cliff this year).

the nats fans who thought Garcia was the next All Star need to wait. Kid's been an unspectacular 3-for-23 lately. Hopefully he'll adjust and be fine.

dugout looks like it has no energy. last night soto returns to the dugout after his dinger, and it was as if Parra never played for Washington.

Usually I complain if Martinez doesn't pull guys early enough. Tonight though I wonder if Corbin had one more inning in him. 92 pitches and a rough fifth but he'd been pitching great earlier.

Philly has their six, seven and eight guys hitting 845, 910, and 832 OPS, that is real pop deep in the line up.

Meanwhile the Phillies screw up on the basepaths and the Nats can't throw and catch, run scored.

Feeling bad for The Lerners. They could've slashed the payroll last winter and gotten the same crummy last place performance like this (sarcasm, they dont need a rebuild).

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 02/09/2020 15:40

Thames is better than this. Apparently, this is his anti-career year. The main problem is the pitching.

Other than Max, the pitchers are off this year. Stras is out, and neither Corbin nor Sanchez is as sharp as last year. I was hoping that they'd get Lynn or Bundy. I guess the price was too high. And the bullpen is its usual self. Last year at the deadline, Rizzo brought in three relievers. This year? Crickets.

No, they don't need to rebuild, but they will need to figure out some things. Castro was good before he went down, and Garcia has been good in his stead. Both are secondbasemen. Both need to be in the lineup. Who is Carter Kieboom, really? Is he the superprospect we'e hard about, or are his struggles the past couple of seasons who he's going to be? If the latter, deal him before everyone else figures that out. Get a decent arm, at least. Use Castro or Garcia at 3B.

I note that the Braves just let Matt Adams go. (He's played for the Braves, Cardinals, Nationals, Cardinals, Nationals, and Braves.) Should they bring him back? He seems to thrive here.

I wonder if there are any halfway-decent arms on the waiver wire.

19 innings and zero runs scored by the Nats this series. Meanwhile Sanchez gives up two in the first with bad defense behind him and a double header tomorrow so we'll probably take the L and save the pen.

Inside the park HR by Turner and bases loaded strikeout by Harper are the highlights so far. Philly is not a good team so maybe we can win one this series.

Nats down 5-1. 3 games in 24 hours, and Voth typically departs after a craptastic 4 2/3 IP, doing his part to further burn up the bullpen.

FP making excuses for Voth. "These young pitchers can struggle in a short season". Really? How about our veteran pitchers who've struggled this season?

7-1 after 6.

MAT tries to barehand a basehit in RF, drops it, picks it up and then just stands there as a runner trots home...FP then made about as damning a comment as I've heard him give this season: if you dont give 100%, than you dont belong on the field. Ouch.

That's a shame because Taylor seems like a nice guy, but he's a marginal player and hustling is the way he's going to stay in the major leagues. Sorry to see that he's in the lineup for the second game, Martinez needs to have the stones to bench guys who give up on the play. Too much acceptance of sub par effort this season.

Another one for the 'Pitching is all about baseball" file: as woeful as they have been this year, Nats are actually 3rd in the NL East in runs per game, better than the Mets and Marlins. But in terms of team ERA, the Nats have the 2nd worst team ERA in the NL, ahead of only Colorado.

Great when you are young and have six years of service time to wait out. Once you're a free agent hoping to get signed on you'll play any position and take at bats when you can get them.

This season he could've shut everyone up by playing merely *very good*, not great. He couldnt do either. Now he's likely to compete against Castro for 3B next season, and he doesnt stand a chance imo.
Would be unwise of them to give up on this kid, they gave lesser-talented Espinosa tons of opportunities.

Q: Nats' Starting pitching
At what point do the Nationals admit that playoff this season is a lost cause and audition any young starting pitchers that they can bring up? It seems like Voth has pitched himself out of the starting rotation and Fedde hasn't done himself any favors either.

A: Thomas Boswell
There is NOBODY.

What you see is what you get. This is the era of Big Arm starters. The Nats know it. That's why they went after 3 young pitchers who touched 100 mph when they signed them --Lucas Giolito, Jesus Lozardo and Renaldo Lopez. Also, Dane Dunning (1st rd pick) was in that category.

They were traded to make runs at a World Series. Fortunately, that worked out. Getting Adam Eaton allowed you to let Harper ho, then sign Corbin and at least two or three others who helped in '19. But that cost Giolito who is 18-1 the last 2 years with 303 K's in 231 innings!

Lopez has been poor. Luzardo (Oak), 22, has lots of promise but hasn't quite blossomed yet. Lopez hasn't worked out --yet.

The Nats gamble was that, out of Ross, Fedde, Voth and Crowe, they come up with one or two "back-end" starters to go behind The Big Three. They knew Anibal Sanchez's career was on borrowed time and are grateful for what he did to help them get rings last year.

But, for now, the rotation you see --and it is ugly-- is the rotation you get. If Sanchez had pitched like '19 and Voth or Fedde had panned out, the Nats would be at or close to .500. Instead, they are 15-25 and unless they finish at least 15-5 they're dead.

Of course, I've talked for years about how ALL teams can run off a "plus-10" streak of 14-3 or the like. Even bad teams can do it. But that usually takes a decent rotation. Unless Sanchez (tonight), Voth and Fedde pitch their best ---not their worst, as they have all season-- this year will be over in a few days.

It's already time to play Garcia and Kieboom (.200) as much as possible for experience. These last 20 games are no time for vets.

BTW, what's wrong with Soto's elbow? On Opening Day, and for a few days afterward, he could barely throw more than a lob in from LF. I've been "monitoring" that. His arm looked much better. But it's not just pitchers who get elbow problems. Fingers crossed on Soto. I assume he'll be back sometime this week. But that is NOT a certainty.

Howie goes onto the 10 day DL, retroactive from 9/6.

19 games in next 18 days -- 12 at home, 7 on the road.

Last off day this season is 9/17. Then starting 9/18, they play 7 games in a brutal 96 hour span. Ouch.

Next 6 games are against quality foes: Atlanta and TB. The rest are against Philly-Mets-Marlins.

Nats are 5.0 GB the final playoff seed, Miami. Who've come down to earth by going 10-12 recently after their initial tear. Miami plays the Yankees and the rest of the NL East to finish the season.
And this: Miami has 23 games in the next 19 days, with ZERO days off.

Braves patted themselves on the back after last night's game, saying it was their biggest win of the year. Not really, though. Not when you're facing Austin Voth, the Fenway Park of Nats pitchers. A 5-0 early lead is not safe with his advanced skill set of Suck. 4 1/3 innings of bullpen torching suck, that is.

Robles is 0-fer in the series so far, and jumps on the first pitch (a ball) to end the game.

After a large sample size of about 800 career AB's, who do The Nats have in Robles? He was rated higher in the minors than Soto. Is he going to just be a slightly better version of MAT?

Martinez is a World Series winning manager, can't ever take that from him, but why send Scherzer out to pitch another inning when he was already at 105 pitches for the game? Martinez has never been able to tell Max no. Four runs later the Nats lead is now a Braves lead.

Wondered the same as you. At the end of the day, wonder if Davey was concerned about how taxed out the bullpen is, and that Max at 75% is better than anything the bullpen will give him at this point. Max apparently felt good with the extra day's rest. This limping dog of a season needs to take a bullet at some point.

From Zuckerman

Quote
Opposing hitters vs. Max Scherzer after his 100th pitch this season: 9-for-18, 3 HR, 1.682 OPS. He's used to finishing with a flourish. This year, he hasn't been able to consistently do that.

Martinez: "He's our ace. And when you have these conversations and talk to him and he says he feels good ... for me, who else do you want out there in the sixth inning?"

In the past, obviously you want Scherzer out there. This year, it's not that simple.

On the DVD thing, more teams than ever will be making the playoffs and all of them in some of the most adverse conditions in MLB history, there will be a lot of teams doing retrospectives of how they banded together. Not the Nats, from ownership, to the GM, to the manager, to the players they all punted this season.

And then there's FP and Carpy issuing their tired old excuses for this dismal season, like "Oh, this is such a weird year". Yeah, right. The Dodgers, Cubs, Yankees, and Braves all had big expectations and have performed as expected. The Nats havent.

I guess if there was 1 season for Stras to miss, it was this one.

at least sanchez didnt use excuses after the game for his crap performance. says he's healthy, etc. thought the balk calls by the ump were ridiculous -- i've seen lots of opposing pitchers do the same as sanchez and not get called. who knows, maybe TB tipped off the umps....but if i'm davey, i dont wanna see sanchez have a chat with the HP ump about the balks as he's being pulled. that guy has done so much damage to the team this season (7.38 ERA) that complaining about a couple of damn balks is ridiculous.

Tanner Rainey just put on IL -- forearm tightness. Due to overwork thanks to Sanchez-Voth-Fedde? Probably. Here's why, imo:

Doolittle appeared in the most 2019 regular season games last season by any Nats reliever -- 63. In comparison, look at this season: Rainey already appeared in 20 of the first 42 games before getting shut down -- over the course of a 162 game season, that would've equated to 77 appearances! That's about 25% more of a workload than Doolittle had last season.

Shut the guy down for the rest of the season. Please.

Ha! That was the sixth inning, the Nats ran out of relief pitching after five innings.

FP and Bob were both going on about how they don't like the expanded playoff field because it devalues the regular season. But a 162 game season is so long that most races are long over by September. I wouldn't mind having twelve teams in the playoffs and starting a week early after a 154 game season.

I think that the beat writers figured out that I was grabbing the line-ups off of their Twitter feeds because they have all switched to images. Anyway, it's Scherzer starting the opener but it's also Redskins Sunday, so I'm going bike riding with the kids for a while before kick-off.

Thanks to Alex Chappell for posting the lineup.

Turner - SS
Soto (L) - LF
Cabrera (S) - DH
Thames (L) - 1B
Holt (L) - RF
Gomes - C
García (L) - 2B
Kieboom - 3B
Stevenson (L) - CF

Scherzer - RHP

I've got football on but I see that Max has allowed one run through five with 95 pitches thrown. Wonder if Martinez will pull Scherzer or let him go one too many innings again.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 20/09/2020 19:24

How is it that I know exactly what is going to happen and our manager doesn't? Pull Max after five innings or a hundred pitches. Martinez even went to the mound as the trouble was starting and left Scherzer in the game. Now the Nats are down with just one inning to go.

Meanwhile FP was just saying that Martinez knows exactly what he's doing. With Max hitting 120 pitches.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 20/09/2020 19:25

I mean, the defense wasn't great on that play, but with two outs Max have up a hit and a walk it was time for him to go.

Now Martinez pulls him.

Bases loaded and the Nats can't get one run.

From last Monday:

Q: Max-ed Out
Do the Nats coaches keep a stat of Max's ERA, WHIP etc. with 100 pitches or fewer and for 100 pitches-plus? I don't know if it's my imagination, but keeping Max in too long does not hold good results. We know he wants to pitch as long as possible but at what point do you get diminishing results, even with a shaky bullpen?

A: Thomas Boswell
Stats can be eloquent --sometimes, unfortunately.

Here is the OPS against Scherzeer by Times Through the Batting Order.

1st --.695

2nd --.663

3rd-- .929.

By pitches, the same pattern of getting tired shows up.

1-25 pitches -- .922 OPS (a Max tend to have bad 1st innings)

26-50 --.490.

51-75 -- .604.

76-100 --.671.

101+ --1.702!!!

The very good news is that he is excellent right UP to 100 pitches. That, to me, means he can probably be very good for years, as long as he's healthy.

But the 101+ is stark --at least this year. Hitters are 9-for-18 with two doubles and three homers. Small data sample, short season. But both the Nats and Max need to look at this hard, and honestly, as '21 unfolds. And be prepared to adjust as necessary. Maybe don;t START the season by limiting him, but don't be stubborn about it either. At SOME point in nhis career, this pattern will probably become permanent.

Nice early lead for the Nats, but I'm sitting here wishing it was a seven inning game. We really need to win this series and play spoiler against the Phillies, it is the only thing worth watching for this last week.

Probably the baseball purists would riot but I'd be fine with seven inning games to get the average game time back under two and a half hours.

Thanks for posting that. Confirms what probably most of us watching the Scherzer starts have been thinking. He's getting to be a better version of Hellickson, fine for five but he needs to be pulled while he is still pitching well, not after the blow up.

Nats up 5-0, Top 4, with the shadows creeping in. Not exactly a Voth-proof lead, but we'll take it.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 22/09/2020 20:40

Nats up 5-1, bottom 5th -- Voth still in game with only 78 pitches. It's going to snow.

The Nats have knocked the Phillies down from the seventh spot to a three way tie for eighth. Nice having these seven inning games, we need to hold on to pull Philly back out of playoff position.

Walked off the Phillies. The Nats sweep the double header. One more game tomorrow to spoil their season.

Rob Manfred is apparently chatting with the Players Assoc in regards to making the expanded playoff format permanent.

Re: It All Starts....Right Now! - 23/09/2020 12:05

Sixteen is too many. I've long called for a twelve team format, with six teams from each league playing round robin, fifteen games per team in nineteen days, with each team playing five three game series vs each other team.

Really happy for that Cuban kid Hernandez. 32 y.o. and finally living his dream with a walkoff to remember. good for him.

In the pregame press conference Martinez said that Hernandez didn't want the ball. He said that it wasn't his first career home run.

Would it not be GREAT if we swept this seres and damaged their playoff chances? After a day the NASDAQ had I need SOMETHING ANYTHING to smile about tonite. Win tonite and every Philly fan assclown will pee down their leg because they got swept by a team that had 4-5 backups starting in each game.

Sense that Max has gotten more intoxicated with himself since the heroics he pulled off in the WS with the neck injury, etc. His Willis Reed-like aura and all that. Sure, the guy is a future HOF'er and he's earned a certain amount of cred. But someone needs to draw a stronger line in the sand with him. That being said, the Nats bullpen has sucked this season, so there's that, too.
