Minors - 10/05/2021 18:52

BOWIE
Rutschman-4 for 21 (.190). FANNED 9 TIMES.Hangout observers say he's got an uppercut swing and is going for homers. If true, the coaches ought to get him out of that nonsense right now. Scott McGregor supposedly said he has trouble hitting a good fastball. That had better be wrong.

Robert Neustrom 8-for-22 (.364)-Good scouting report says he has great power but will shorten wing and take a single. Can stay in RF.

Kyle Bradish (Dodgers for Bundy), DL Hall, Kevin Smith (Mets for Givens): all have pitched between 4.0-4.2 innings and have 0 ERA's

Nick Vespi 5 inn.-1.69, 10K

Some pretty good talent down there.

ABERDEEN-easily leads High-A w/2.04 team ERA

Joseph Ortiz, Shortstop 4th pick 2019 8-for-23 .348-one of a couple of high-draft SS hitting well.

Rom, Kyle Brnovich, Ryan Wilson all 5 innings 0.00 ERA's

K-Rod

Norfolk outfielder Yusniel Diaz is day-to-day after suffering a leg injury yesterday following an RBI double in the ninth inning and needing assistance leaving the field.

Early word was that Diaz felt discomfort in his thigh/upper leg. A decision on the injured list will be made in the next few days.

Re: Minors - 12/05/2021 07:53

Norfolk sucks. Everybody else over .500. Aberdeen, which has had one crummy team after another for almost their whole existence, is one loss from perfect.

Lots of people off to good starts, several of which are playing their first season of pro ball.

Elias really has added talent to the minors.

Re: Minors - 12/05/2021 16:56

That's been his goal from the start. They've signed lot of Latin American guys.-quantity if not quality. They've traded borderline veterans for others. But most of it is in low levels and won't have an impact till next season or later.

Re: Minors - 13/05/2021 03:29

The thing that impressed me most about DL Hall last nite was the ZERO walks. If this kid acquires control.to go w/that stuff of his.

BTW, Wilkerson's at second base in Norfolk and batting .400. I know he's been lousy to date w/Baltimore but .400's nothing to sneeze at.Has he found himself?

SS Gunnar Henderson, 19, 2nd rd. pick in 2018 is crushing it at Delmarva .357 w/3HR. Had 3 doubles tonite.

He did well. Keep him traded.

Notice how everybody's too old for their level now? That lost year really screwed them. You say it's the same for every team, but not for every kid. Anybody drafted this year on will get an edge in the age department.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 14/05/2021 01:29

Bowie's offense is LIT again. Adley had 3 walks tonight. I keep picturing that Mets pitcher standing with the bat on his shoulder, and Big Ben exhorting him to be a man and at least swing. Lol.

Tyler Joiner (our draft) hasn't sucked so far in his minors career. He's never gotten much ink. Maybe a bullpen piece.

Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 15/05/2021 14:39

There are several guys on that team whose OBP is an outsized slice of their batting average. They might be stressing the walks there. I know Buck Britton pretty well. Don't know their hitting coach one iota, Ryan Fuller. Send a case of whatever they're drinking to all our other generals.

Hitters

There are a lot of guys whose BB:K rates are pretty healthy. Adley is literally 1:1. It's like he figured out he couldn't hit, and quit swinging.

A little piece on Bradish.. He's fanned 26 in 13.1 innings, including 10 of 12 batters lat nite. if you can believe it.No mention of injury, thankfully.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 20/05/2021 22:49

Alex Wells sucked again, but he didn't get the loss. Some solace for him. Norfolk only lost by 1, in ten innings. That's a moral victory for them.
Posted By: carolina

Re: Minors - 20/05/2021 23:57

Bradish must have good stuff. Ten of the twelve outs he got were k's. Bundy has come back down to earth. We got four pitchers in that deal. It might end up being a very good one.

Re: Minors - 22/05/2021 12:06

Rodriguez has been untouchable at the High-A level in his first four starts of the year. He turned in his best performance of the short season in Aberdeen’s 5-2 victory over Wilmington, tossing six innings of one-run, one-hit ball with eight punchouts and no walks while picking up his second win. His lone blemish of the day was a third-inning home run off the bat of outfielder Gage Canning. The righty owns an ERA of 1.47, a WHIP of 0.71, has struck out 31 while allowing just four walks, and has a batting average against of .141 in his 18 1/3 dominant innings this season

Probably at the end of June or in early July. They don't rush pitchers which is good. Hall w/likely go to triple-A later on if he doesn't throw in too many clunkers like he did the other nite.

Bill, Rutch was jumped from lo-A to AA, and that's a jump.

Re: Minors - 24/05/2021 18:10

OF: Hudson Haskin, Delmarva Shorebirds (Low-A)
(Orioles No. 14)
.500/.609/
1:07 PM EDT
.778, 5 G, 18 AB, 7 R, 9 H, 2 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 3 BB, 4 SO, 4 SB, 1 CS

The Orioles’ second-round pick out of Tulane last year now has a nine-game hitting streak going, picking up multiple knocks in three of his five games this past week. The weekend was particularly productive, as the outfielder went 5-for-8 with a pair of doubles, a homer and five RBIs. He’s now seventh in the Low-A East with his .355 average and he’s one of five Delmarva hitters in the top 15 in OPS.

He was voted on the prospect team of the week.

I don't know what they'll do about pitching. They may be forced to bring up people before they want to unless they go to the scrap heap. I think you'll see Bradish soon. I think he's closest to being ML-ready.

They're really being careful w/DL Hall. Fanned 8 in 4 scoreless innings yesterday. He's not pitching deeply into games, but they won't push him.

Re: Minors - 28/05/2021 03:55

Orioles: Grayson Rodriguez, RHP (MLB No. 21), High-A Aberdeen
Rodriguez put together another strong effort as he threw 47 of his 69 pitches for strikes across five innings of one-run ball. The 21-year-old gave up two hits and struck out nine, bringing his season total to 40 through 23 1/3 innings. Brooklyn scratched across a run in the first inning and picked up a single in the second, but that was the extent of the damage and once Rodriguez got rolling, he was dominant. The right-hander retired the final 11 batters he faced, eight of which went down via a strikeout.

He's got great stuff and good command. Move him up soon.

Every farm team won. Note to drafting committee, when you run out of sure things about the fifth inning, consider a closer. The system had a lot of base runners in the 9th inning. Norfolk almost choked it away.

Re: Minors - 02/06/2021 03:29

Closer is the one thing O's don't seem to have. However, they have plenty to trade in order to get a few back-of-the-bullpen types.

My man Johnny Rizer (he of the great baseball name) batting .600 at Bowie. (limited at-bats). wink

Who's this guy Bishop who started for Bowie? Might have started season bad, but he's coming on!

Roch:
Single-A Delmarva shortstop Gunnar Henderson has been named Low-A East Player of the Month for May. In 20 games, Henderson slashed .313/.391/.613 with a league-leading 30 RBIs. He had three five-RBI games during the month.

Baseball America ranks Henderson as the No. 93 prospect and MLBPipeline.com has him 99th.

Grayson Rodriguez was named High-A East League Pitcher of the Month after going 3-0 with a 1.54 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings to earn a promotion from Single-A Aberdeen to Double-A Bowie.

Bawl:
Grayrod is no shock, but I never saw Gunnar slaying his enemies in such a fashion. I guess I should have believed his press.

Re: Minors - 03/06/2021 02:07

Too damn much for my old head. I can't believe I didn't recognize the #2 pick from last year. Heston The Red must be renting too much space in my head. Yeah, it's amazing. I used to peruse the minors looking for Yazstremskis batting .270, who might bloom someday. Right now, you have to be hitting .320 to even get a nod. And pitching is sick. Even with all the drama from the next wave at the high levels.
Posted By: mikezpen

Re: Minors - 03/06/2021 03:01

It was lot easier a couple of years ago when you had perhaps 2 or 3 prospects to watch who were worth anything. And usually, the front office rushed them up too fast and they didn't turn out to be anything. Particularly pitchers. Remember?

Something else, and maybe I'm imagining it. But it appears the coaching throughout the system is a lot better than it's been. Pitchers are learning new pitches. Wells has picked up,a good change-up as Palmer described tonite.Hall at Bowie is walking a lot fewer than last year. Somebody is helping him.So many players are doing well. Coaching and management have definitely improved. The front office has put together quite an organization it appears.Next year, we'll start seeing the resuts.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 03/06/2021 10:15

If the three lowest levels of the system were big league teams, they'd all be running over 100 wins pace. That's a result right there. Short season will start next month. At my current pace, I won't know a single player. Our first crack at all the over slots we got last year. Woot!

The Scrote's out. Alex Wells is running on an 8 run lead into the sixth. Yay Norfolk.

Peralta confuses me. He's off to some kind of start in Bowie, and is pitching well tonight. He's been on our prospect list since Mussina was the ace. I could never see why. Now at 24, he's killing it at AA. Did somebody teach him to cheat, or what? I guess he's reluctantly on my list. Until he isn't. God knows nobody is blocking him from above.

Bowie's 8 game win streak has them with the best record in affiliated baseball. With Grayrod or Hall pitching, they're basically The King and his Court. I'm pretty sure Hall ends this season at Norfolk. 33 games until midseason for them. Unless he falls apart, that's my guess.
Posted By: mikezpen

Re: Minors - 05/06/2021 17:03

Hall has to throw fewer pitches and go beyond 4 or 5 innings. When he throws strikes and stays ahead of the batters, forget it. Nobody hits him.

BTW E-Rod was timed at 100 on a pitch or two the other nite for Bowie.

Re: Minors - 09/06/2021 06:59

Every time he pitches, I sing "there's miss Perkins again" from China Grove. This seems to be one of the guys that was derailed by the lost year. He was great in '19, and still getting it done in '21. His WHIP is 0.64. But he's 24, in low-a ball. He needs a promotion or two. Otherwise, what's the point for he or the system?

Rom is still rolling.

Re: Minors - 09/06/2021 15:45

I think this organization w/rather hold somebody back a little too long to make sure they've mastered the skills expected at that level rather than rush someone the way to previous regime did.Losing a yr. to COVID makes this strategy look bad sometimes. I'd never heard of this guy.

Re: Minors - 10/06/2021 14:47

A note on Rutschman. Last nite Bowie was muffled by a pitcher who yielded only 3 hits in 7 innings. Yet he had 2-for-4. You figure at least 1 and possibly both hits came off this guy. That's a sign that he's really coming on strong.

and Grenier w/2 hits today up to .312. Do you believe it?
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 13/06/2021 18:50

Baumann threw 4 shutdown innings on 47 pitches. Damn fine outing. Drops my blood pressure 2 points.

Adley;s probably in the minors this year because of pocketbook management issues. Otherwise, he seems ready.

Hard to get aboard the Grenier bandwagon, since it started about 6 weeks ago. Jees. What if he is real? It kind of shuffles the depth chart. He's a no doubt about it shortstop. The other shortstops could be reapportioned. Almost instant left side of the infield.

Re: Minors - 13/06/2021 18:54

I figure Rutsch and maybe Rizer go to Norfolk sometime after the Break to see that level. Tides could certainly use them.

A lot of middle infielders show promise although no consistency w/the bat right now.But they do have the numbers of bodies.

Cameron Bishop knocked around in May but is unscored on in June. This month he's pitched 3 times, 14 innings w/7 hits and 24 k's.

Roch:
Left-hander Kevin Smith, acquired from the Mets last summer in the Miguel Castro trade, has been promoted to Triple-A Norfolk.

Smith, 24, had a 1.04 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in six games (five starts) with Double-A Bowie. He struck out 37 batters in 26 innings.

MLBPipeline.com rates Smith as the No. 15 prospect in the Orioles minor league system.

Smith joins a Norfolk rotation that includes Zac Lowther (No. 9) and Kyle Bradish (No. 12).

Infielder Greg Cullen, 24, is advancing from low Single-A Delmarva to Bowie after batting .281/.439/.313 in 10 games. He was acquired from the Braves with infielder AJ Graffanino in the Tommy Milone deal.

Infielder Jean Carmona, 21, has been assigned to Delmarva. He was part of the return from the Brewers for Jonathan Schoop in 2018.

Carmona hasn’t appeared in a game this year.

The kids swept last night. I think two teams needed late game heroics. Something that flat doesn't exist in the bigs.

Anybody think Stewart should be worried that Bowie CF Rizer has a .900+ OPS?
Posted By: carolina

Re: Minors - 18/06/2021 14:23

Yes he should be worried. He should worry about any outfielder that can hit mlb pitching and play a competent outfield.

Guessing a CF plays a good corner. Don't know if he can throw, but Cedric can't either, and he may be in the gold glove conversation.

Johnny resin up your bat
And play the field hard.
Cause hell's broke loose in Bowie
And Elias deals the cards

If you win,
You get a shiny trophy made of gold.
And if you lose,
The Yankees get your soul!

Re: Minors - 18/06/2021 16:27

The pitchers bowed their heads because they knew that they'd been beat
They laid that fiddle on the ground right by Johnny's feet.
"Take the hill", he said real loud, "if you ever want to try again."
'i done told you once you SOB's, that my bat's the best there's been"

I still think this guy has a great baseball name.I said 2 years ago he was going to make it.Appears to have 20+ home run potential, too.

The only problem I see is perhaps over-aggressiveness. He doesn't walk enough and strikes out too much.

Why not?

Re: Minors - 26/06/2021 11:04

Mets claimed Sisco. No trade backs.

Roch was trolling the mock drafts, a couple of which have us taking the Louisville catcher at number 5. He's the top rated hitter in the draft. I could see that, if we don't take a pitcher. They have one Vandy pitcher going second. The other one has a bad arm, and his stock is dropping. Roch thinks we'll draft the bad arm. There will be a top gun SS available when we pick. Can Elias resist that?
Posted By: mikezpen

Re: Minors - 26/06/2021 16:21

If a stud pitcher isn't available, take the shortstop if he's top-notch all way around, particularly if he can hit. They can play anywhere, and our infielders, other than the Gunnar, aren't tearing the minors up.God, don't take the bad arm. A first pick project is fine if you're drafting 32nd, but not FIFTH! And a catcher is too limited. Looks like Rutch w/hold down that spot; he's a winner.

Interesting, if sad note. The O's of back-in-the-day were great developing infielders: Davey Johnson, Belanger, Grich, Adair, Brooksie, Dauer and DeCinces. They've gone wild on drafting them in recent years and gotten nothing.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 26/06/2021 16:27

The catcher might be the best hitter in the draft. "They" think he can man a corner. Unless they have half a billion to buy a pitching staff.....

Re: Minors - 26/06/2021 16:30

Grayrod night. If he goes down, we have nothing left.
Posted By: mikezpen

Re: Minors - 26/06/2021 18:02

Some guys started great but are tanking, perhaps because league caught up with them. OK, maybe they can now catch back up with the league.Hall's in if he stays healthy. Then you have a bunch of maybes: Knight, Rom, Peralta, Bradish, Baumann, Brnovich and Kevin Smith. Almost are double-A or higher. Some of these will make it.

Frankly, I hope they find a top-notch pitcher to take in this draft. But if not, take the best player, preferably a shortstop.

Re: Minors - 09/07/2021 22:40

Roch says DL Hall isn't dead. I dispute it.

Some minor league health updates from executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias:

Infielder Richie Martin began a hitting progression today and should come off the injured list by the end of July or early August. Left-hander DL Hall will resume throwing in two weeks and likely pitch again this season. Infielder Joey Ortiz will undergo surgery in the next few days to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder and should be fully recovered next spring.

Infielder Terrin Vavra, who’s been out with back soreness, should get back in Double-A Bowie’s lineup by mid-August. Infielder Anthony Servideo will begin playing in rehab games next week in Sarasota, Fla., and should return to Single-A Delmarva about a week after that date. Pitcher Carter Baumler’s recovery from Tommy John surgery is going well and he should be full-go next spring.

Re: Minors - 09/07/2021 22:48

I am forever suspicious of men with labrums. Both my rotator cuffs are kinda crap, from two different casualties. Maybe I have 'em too. I can only do bench and military presses with like 25 pounds. So I beat the hell out of all the core body equipment, so I feel less like a labrum.

Re: Minors - 14/07/2021 17:28

Looks good mostly, but too many walks
Posted By: mikezpen

Re: Minors - 14/07/2021 17:29

Organization has only 2 top-flite pitching prospects: Hall and Rodriguez. Rest are in and out, although you have very young ones in Delmarva and half-season ball who we don't have a handle on, yet.Interesting that, w/all the top picks we've gotten the past three years, our two best pitching prospects came beforehand when we drafted lower.

But if they all stay healthy in Baltimore next year, a top three of Means, Rodriguez and Hall w/b pretty dam good.

Re: Minors - 14/07/2021 17:38

Hall has to improve his command, but no doubt he's got the stuff.

Re: Minors - 14/07/2021 17:41

Mac is about 32. He has made just under 7 million bucks. Who has the bird legs now, Limu?

Young was pretty good. Mopping up, the great I. Feliz.

Re: Minors - 14/07/2021 18:24

Delmarva's got a good record, but none of their position players has great numbers. Haskin went 4-for-4 but is batting only .286 after all that. And, he's the leading hitter.
Posted By: carolina

Re: Minors - 15/07/2021 00:39

Fenter has thrown 5 innings allowing just one walk.
Posted By: carolina

Re: Minors - 15/07/2021 00:45

He gave up a solo homerun right after I posted that. Lowther got knocked around.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 15/07/2021 00:55

Haskin had 4 hits, and drove in exactly zero of their ten runs. Out of the 3 hole. That's freakish as hell.

Re: Minors - 15/07/2021 01:06

Gillispie was decent for once.9th pick in 2019. Orioles need some of their other pitchers to develop.

Re: Minors - 15/07/2021 01:17

Preferably a lot of 'em. They signed a non-drafted free agent out of (I think) Miami. Kid has some very plush peripherals. He might be a real find.

Fenter tired in the sixth. He's ready, bring him up.

Dusten Knight is pitching well for Norfolk, but he's 30 years old.

Bad night. Teams are slipping even though a few hitters did well. The pitching is generally HORRIBLE.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 16/07/2021 07:00

My thoughts exactly. They are drafting college hitters now, because of the high success rate. And presumably fast path to the top. We'll be crap if we have to compete for pitchers with Boston and MFY. The Blue Crabs just can't supply us.

Turchin hit a two run homer, 'cause I embarrassed them.

Baumann pitched well at Bowie. 8 Ks in 6 innings. 80 pitches.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 16/07/2021 23:22

A John Wayne Baumann dick reattachment (probably the guy who did Manny's knees) would be the story of the week here. Especially since we forgot to draft any top tier pitchers.

Re: Minors - 18/07/2021 18:18

Rom was good today for Aberdeen. He might be moving up soon.
Posted By: mikezpen

Re: Minors - 18/07/2021 18:46

It'll be harder for him because he can't get by on stuff like Rodriguez can. He can be off on his control and still pitch a decent game; Rom can't. I hope some of the younger guys at Delmarva/Aberdeen can develop. The other pitchers have floundered as they've moved up or their league has written a book on them.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 18/07/2021 19:53

Rom's a leftist, with a K:BB rate of 4.5 to 1. WHIP is 1.15. He should be ready to move.

Poor guy. I just looked at whatever they call the Gulf Coast League now. I totally don't get it. We have the top OPS guy in the league. He's 24. We have one of the top pitchers. He's 23, and was a Pirates pick. I guess it all shakes out next year, but it feels weird. Those guys used to be 18 and 19.

Mayo is the 26th OPS, or the top of page two, if you prefer.

Re: Minors - 23/07/2021 14:00

I don't know. Our crafty lefties don't fare well even tho they sometimes do well in the minors. Other teams develop them though. And they always seem to hurt the Birds.

You can mis-locate a 95 mph fastball in the center of the plate and maybe he'll foul it off.A 90 mph pitch has a good chance of going 400 feet.

The last really successful "crafty left hander" we had was Scott McGregor, and that was a long time ago.

Draft picks are ready to go: This week we will begin to see many members of the Orioles 2021 draft class take the field for one or both teams the O’s field in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League.

Top pick Colton Cowser and second-rounder Connor Norby will be among those that debut this week - and possibly as early as today. The draft picks could play somewhere between 10 and 20 games in Florida before the club considers moving them to full-season ball with low Single-A Delmarva.

Rom was 5-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 30 innings, the first five starts at Single-A Aberdeen and the last at Double-A Bowie. Stowers batted .340 with a 1.076 OPS, seven home runs and 15 RBIs with the Baysox.

Re: Minors - 05/08/2021 17:05

I'm waiting for them to move Coby Mayo, et. al., up from Florida Complex Lge. to Delmarva.Mayo's smokin' down there.

Despite his gaudy numbers, I have my doubts about Rom.He's a soft tosser whose finesse lefty stuff totally befuddles hitters in A ball but w/meet his match is high minors and certainly at the Major League level. We've seen it with Lowther, Wells, etc.Great minor league nos but toast in Majors.

Re: Minors - 06/08/2021 11:21

Adley hit his 18th. He's probably ready too. When he was drafted, they said he'd be one of the premier catchers in the bigs if he cam up that day. Anyway, Severino's a no-brainer non-tender next year, and here he comes.

Zimm had a good outing if you don't count the four walks.

Re: Minors - 06/08/2021 14:22

Sevy mite be a useful part of a deal. Or, it w/b nice to have a back-up catcher who can hit a little. Wynns is great defensively but he is a cipher as a hitter.
Posted By: carolina

Re: Minors - 06/08/2021 19:54

I think I would prefer Wynns. Sevi lets too many balls get by him. He's inconsistent with the bat also. For what will basically be the Sunday catcher behind Adley, I like good defense.

I hope you tune into “O’s Xtra” pregame today when I join the show to talk about the O’s farm. Among the players we will talk about this afternoon is high Single-A Aberdeen catcher Maverick Handley, who just might be the best catching prospect in the organization not named Adley.

Handley has the unique ability to cut down runners trying to steal while also being an excellent basestealer himself. The sixth-round pick in 2019 out of Stanford has thrown out 43 percent this year (20-of-46) with a plus arm while also himself stealing 12 bases in 13 attempts (92 percent).

Funny. Delmarva's winning like we figured, but Cowser and Mayo aren't hitting.Ryland Bannon's suddenly on a roll for Tides.4-6 last nite w/2 homers. Still only at .180's but could be factor next yr. if he keeps hitting.Starting pitching not bad but relievers awful.

All I know is that they'd better go w/pitching in upcoming draft.

Re: Minors - 20/08/2021 15:28

Infielder Rylan Bannon hit two more homers for Triple-A Norfolk as the Tides beat Charlotte 11-6. Bannon went 4-for-5 and drove in six runs. Not bad for a player on a hot streak, but one that was batting .168 at gametime. He’s now making up for lost time. Bannon is 12-for-23 with eight homers and 16 RBIs over his last seven games. He has three two-homer games in his last seven contests and his OPS has improved from .495 to .735 in seven games.

Delmarva's infield is murderer's row for real. The whole pile of 'em could play together in the bigs someday. No stranding 15 runners like Norfolk did. Well, if they strand 15, they'll plate 10 too.

Delmarva had 18 runs, with only one two run homer. Baumann gave up the only run in Norfolk, and did in fact get the loss. I expect he'll take that every time.

I doubt if Baumann or Rutschman come up this year. Next year could be a strike year, and they won't want to start any service clocks prematurely. Roch disagrees on Baumann, so maybe that's not a thing anymore.

Orioles' Jomar Reyes: Falls short of Double-A in 2017
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Reyes wrapped up his injury-plagued 2017 season at with a .302/.333/.434 slash line through 50 games at High-A Frederick.

The top prospect missed a majority of the season after punching a wall, causing Reyes to need surgery on his right pinky finger. He entered the year with high hopes of moving into MiLB's higher levels, but the 20-year-old will need to wait another year before making that happen.

Note: The Orioles made the following minor league promotions:
Outfielder Kyle Stowers: Double-A Bowie to Norfolk
Infielder Willy Yahn: Single-A Aberdeen to Bowie
Outfielder Mason Janvrin: Single-A Delmarva to Aberdeen
Pitcher Jake Lyons: Delmarva to Aberdeen
Outfielder Mishael Deson: Rookie-level Florida Complex League to Delmarva

Stowers, the 71st-overall pick in the 2019 draft out of Stanford University, leads the system with 24 home runs and is moving up to his third level this summer.

Re: Minors - 07/09/2021 04:15

Stowers had a .938 OPS in Bowie for 66 games. Gotta think he's McKenna next year. He's probably a step or two slower, from the steals numbers.

Cool summary. Henderson didn't really distinguish himself hitting at the higher level. Sometimes it happens in the minors. We do have some legit talent down there now.
Posted By: mikezpen

Re: Minors - 07/09/2021 17:41

Mite take Henderson another year to get started. He's still young.

Stowers also has great OBP's even though he's striking out too much. They'll leave him down till he corrects that. Won't rush him up.Deson also came via trade it appears.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 07/09/2021 18:57

Stowers .938 OPS leads the team among dudes with playing time. That's .037 points higher than Rutschman had. There must be some line where they care more about what you do when you don't strike out. I don't know what that is exactly. He strikes out over once a game, but terrorizes pitchers when he doesn't.

Re: Minors - 08/09/2021 22:50

Fenter won game one, backed by 3 hits. Two runs held up though.

Re: Minors - 12/09/2021 01:12

Bowie storms back with a 4 run ninth, for a 1 run win. Delmarva stormed back too. Unfortunately, they then have to pitch. A hard team to bury though.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 12/09/2021 02:15

Cowser with 4 hits. Mayo with 2 doubles. Lotta hitting at Delmarva. Those people have had some crap teams over the years. Bet they're loving this.
Posted By: mikezpen

Re: Minors - 12/09/2021 06:38

A pretty good draft this year, it appears. And while you can't forget what happened to Henderson at Aberdeen, i still think a goodly number of this class could blow thru Hi-A and wind up next season in Bowie.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 12/09/2021 12:36

Even Cowser, who drew grumbles, is hitting the best part of .400. It looks like a heck of a class. The 19's and 20's have some talent too.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 12/09/2021 21:59

Pinto gave up a homer, so 2 ER in 6 innings. What a year he's had.

Speaking of which, Jacob Teter, our 13th round pick 1B has an OPS over 900 at Delmarva.

I've been keeping my eye on Teeter.

I imagine he'll start the season at Norfolk. But if he hits, he could open up some interesting trade possibilities.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 13/09/2021 12:43

Lots of possibilities. Stewart can stay or go. He's qualified filler. Which means cheap. Which Mancini isn't, since he's arbitration eligible. Unless there isn't any more in the new collective bargaining agreement. The kids should force out Stewart and McKenna pretty quickly.
Posted By: carolina

Re: Minors - 13/09/2021 14:19

Mckenna looks overmatched at the big league level. Stewart really isn't good at anything other than delivering the occasional longball.
Posted By: mikezpen

Re: Minors - 13/09/2021 15:21

Stew's gone next yr. McKenna looks woeful, but he did hit .300 at Norfolk, which is better than hitting .300 in low-A or wherever he played before.I'd keep him at Norfolk and see if he develops. Does have some skills.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 13/09/2021 19:10

Can't remember which one. One of the new kids is hitting like .380 down there somewhere. Probably Cowser. The day of the turd is coming to an end in Baltimore. then I remind myself, when did I ever, for a minute, think Cedric would bloom into this mini-monster? No clue, had I.

Henderson batted .312/.369/.574 with 11 doubles, a triple, eight home runs and 39 RBIs in 35 games with Single-A Delmarva and .230/.343/.432 with 16 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 35 RBIs in 65 games with Aberdeen.

Right-hander Grayson Rodriguez (9-1, 2.39 ERA) is set to make his final regular season start tonight at 6:35 p.m. as Bowie hosts Altoona. The Baysox will try to get closer to a playoff berth, and if they make it, Rodriguez is expected to get one final start in his 2021 season next week.

I'm sure his 3 innings will be stellar. It's the next six innings that are scary. They can out-blast most teams though.

Letting go at least 5.

Re: Minors - 16/09/2021 11:11

Adley hit his second triple for Norfolk last night. That's remarkable. I was watching some film of him hitting a couple of days ago. He is a powerfully built fellow. You wouldn't look at him and suspect speed.

16th round pick Van Loon pitching for Delmarva tonight. His first 11 innings have been great.

Re: Minors - 16/09/2021 13:55

The thought crossed my mind that it mite be better if they don't get the first pick. Then, that super-stud center fielder won't be available, and they mite be more inclined to take something un-sexy....like a pitcher.

Re: Minors - 16/09/2021 14:41

We'll take the best hitter from a mid-major conference, and use the savings on overslot high schoolers. If there's a Rutschman available, they might be shamed into signing him.

Re: Minors - 16/09/2021 19:17

The Orioles claimed right-hander Brooks Kriske off waivers from the Yankees this afternoon and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk.

Pitcher Jorge López was transferred to the 60-day injured list to open a spot on the 40-man roster. López is done for the season after spraining his right ankle.

Kriske, 27, was a sixth-round pick in 2016 out of USC who made eight relief appearances this summer and allowed 13 earned runs (14 total) and 12 hits in 7 2/3 innings. He walked six batters and struck out seven.

The minor league numbers are much more impressive.

Kriske-Throws-Yankees-Sidebar.jpgKriske has registered a 2.36 ERA and 1.070 WHIP in four seasons, with 176 strikeouts in 133 2/3 innings. He struck out 41 batters in 28 1/3 innings this season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but also walked 14.

The Yankees designated Krisle for assignment Tuesday and re-signed Sal Romano. He was optioned seven times during the summer.

Kriske’s major league debut came against the Orioles on July 29, 2020 and consisted of a scoreless ninth inning with one walk and two strikeouts. He had the exact same numbers in his fourth and final appearance of the season against the Orioles in the second game of a Sept. 11 doubleheader in New York, also throwing 22 pitches.

Kriske has one minor league option remaining and a fastball that can exceed 95 mph..

The Orioles keep shuttling pitchers back and forth and already have used a club-record 59 this season.

Another AAAA arm.

Re: Minors - 16/09/2021 19:31

Better than half Norfolk's staff. They have the elongated season, so yeah. I hope when Stowers and Adley and that crap gets here, they have a better pitching plan than Mexican League castoffs.

Re: Minors - 16/09/2021 20:38

Sedlock got crushed, Stowers hit a homerun and had 2 walks. Diaz went 0-4 and is hitting .168.

Re: Minors - 16/09/2021 21:46

Sedlock probably had his best season. He sucked.

Re: Minors - 18/09/2021 00:41

Rom, five perfect innings, seven k's. He's out.

Re: Minors - 18/09/2021 00:47

Peek and Bradish excellent also.

Re: Minors - 19/09/2021 01:17

Kids are getting swept tonight. Delmarva's only down 9 though. They can do that.

Re: Minors - 19/09/2021 11:19

A Roch blog comment said Bowie is do or die making the playoffs today. Bowie's starting pitcher is a 33 year old turd, with abysmal numbers. Unless he's only pitching one inning, you'd think they don't really care. I'm not particularly invested in it either. The system has gotten in a full season. They got tons of information about everybody. It can shut down now. I'll miss it, but a 5 game series or two extra won't really count much.

Re: Minors - 19/09/2021 21:03

Jannis out-turded himself, but Bowie won anyway.

Delmarva's only down 4 in the 4th. I don't know what theirs or Aberdeen's playoff status is.

Re: Minors - 19/09/2021 23:24

When we saw Jannis, his knuckleball wasn't doing much knuckling. Just a lot of getting whacked.

Re: Minors - 20/09/2021 10:45

5 game championship series against Cleveland's Rubber Ducks. Most fearsome mascot choice ever. Bowie's season seems somewhat indicative of our minor league resurgence. For all the talent that cycled through, Delmarva and Aberdeen finished second in their divisions. Close enough.

Bowie getting one hit. Their pitching is keeping them in it.

Re: Minors - 22/09/2021 01:10

Westburg hit a homerun in the first, and they were no hit the rest of the game.

Grenier finally drew a walk. Grayrod tomorrow. A reversal of fortune.

Big G got his butt spanked. I hope there isn't any health issues involved.

Re: Minors - 25/09/2021 00:27

Yeah, that was scary ugly. Rom pitched like a boss tonight. Bowie's kickin' it.

Norfolk up too.

Re: Minors - 25/09/2021 01:05

Stowers 3-for-3 in Norfolk. Up to .310.

Re: Minors - 25/09/2021 01:07

McSweeney sucked for Bowie. Trying to cling to one run lead now.

Re: Minors - 25/09/2021 01:15

Almengo gives up the lead to the first batter in the ninth.
Posted By: carolina

Re: Minors - 25/09/2021 01:16

Tied. Ninth inning homerun. Grenier made a very costly throwing error with the bases loaded and no outs in the eighth. That let in two runs. Fontana made a throwing error in that inning too.

Re: Minors - 25/09/2021 01:26

Bowie had the W in the bag, and they let it out. Game over.

Re: Minors - 25/09/2021 01:29

Season over. Some superb players ran through Bowie this year. Next year could be a deluge. Not pitchers.

Re: Minors - 25/09/2021 01:36

I'd like to see some kind of stats on how our minor league bullpens stacked up against everybody elses. They seemed anemic. Big league bullpens are usually stocked with failed starters, so you could say we have quite a supply there. smile

Ain't that the truth.

Re: Minors - 25/09/2021 02:27

Bradish and Sedlock shut out the mighty CLT. Nice job. Stowers was 4-5. Look out Stewart.

Re: Minors - 26/09/2021 01:06

Adley got 3 hits in Norfolk's 9th inning loss. They can ovate his way out the door, because he's done there.

Re: Minors - 29/09/2021 14:23

Norfolk plays tonight, then tomorrow afternoon. That will be all for the minor leagues. A successful campaign by most accounts. Not so pitching maybe. A couple of kids started to emerge from the swirling mists. Rom moved forwards. D.L. Hall and Baumann harshed the whole buzz. I'm totally suspicious of Hall's made-up injury.
Posted By: mikezpen

Re: Minors - 29/09/2021 22:28

What's his issue? Something more serious than they're saying?

Baumann has been absolutely terrible.

Re: Minors - 30/09/2021 03:57

1 game left for Norfolk. That's the season, until AFL. If there is one.
Posted By: BaseBawl

Re: Minors - 01/10/2021 11:38

Yeah, there is an AFL. Norfolk finishes 51-76. Two players on their final roster didn't suck. That should change next year. Maybe they'll even have some pitching.
